West End hungry for classical music

When Jane Farge started organising classical music concerts in Sandys, it seemed an unusual place for them.

Most musical affairs like this one are held in town.

“It felt unique,” said Ms Farge, a trained opera singer and voice and piano instructor.

Those events were so well received that she has organised another classical music concert for this month at St Joseph’s Church at 45 Somerset Road.

“It is a really lovely church with great acoustics,” Ms Farge said.

Performers include guitarist Steve Crawford, viola and violinist Johanna Piño Gonzalez pianist Andrea Hodson Patton and singer Ms Farge.

“It is all classical, but Steve and Johanna will be doing some Argentinian and Spanish so there will be a lot of variety,” she said. “Steve teaches guitar at the Bermuda School of Music. He and Johanna have a duo together called Duo Latino. Steve is playing a Spanish piece as a solo.”

As for her own repertoire, she is most excited about singing German lieder (songs).

“I love singing in German,” she said. “My voice has a darker quality now than it had years ago. The tone and colour in my voice just fits that language.”

She will also be doing a few Schubert songs accompanied by guitar and piano. Ms Farge said you do not find Schubert’s lieder accompanied by guitar very often but she found a version with the instrument and thought ‘let’s do it!’.

“Then I’m doing one of the Dowland lute songs, originally written for lute and voice,” she said.

These songs by John Dowland were written in the late 16th and early 17th century. Ms Farge said: “It just sounds so cool to have music from that era.”

She is 68 and started performing at 10 or 11 while growing up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England.

Part of the proceeds from the concert go to St Joseph’s Church and the other part to cancer charity Pals.

“I’ve been singing for a long time,” she said. “I came from a very poor background, so people were very good to me, and I got scholarships and won awards to study my music and further it. It is such a pleasure to fundraise for charities. It just gives me such a good feeling.”

Alongside her performance, Ms Farge continues to teach privately.

“I do a little bit of teaching privately, just as much as I can,” she said. “There is no better feeling in the world from a teacher’s perspective than when you see a child doing well, even if it is just an improvement or them picking up on something.”

She loves teaching so much that she does not really consider it a job.

“When I see that people are really enjoying the music, it gives me pleasure,” she said.

Her plan is to make the classical music events at St Joseph’s Church an annual happening.

The concert will be held on June 21 and 28 at 5pm.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, students and children from 5 to 18.

They can be obtained from Liz Card on 234-0872 or WhatsApp 335-2077, from Ms Farge on 747-4060 or by e-mailing lizziewhitney2015@gmail.com
