Man admits manslaughter in connection with senior’s death

A 44-year-old has admitted unlawfully killing a senior in an incident on Front Street last year.

John Paul Samuels, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday to a count of manslaughter in connection with the death of 71-year-old James Burgess on August 7, 2025.

Karim Nelson, for the Crown, told the court that the view had been taken that Samuels had acted in defence of another but then “went one step too far”.

The court also heard that there was a common position that a further period of incarceration would not be sought.

Puisne Judge Alan Richards ordered a social inquiry report on Samuels and released him on bail until August, when the matter is expected to return to the Supreme Court for sentencing.
