Man assaults officers, damages police vehicle during arrest
A man arrested for traffic offences found himself in deeper trouble after he assaulted his arresting officers and damaged their vehicle, according to a police spokesman.
Officers saw the motorcyclist riding in a dangerous manner at about 11.50am on Wednesday while they conducted mobile patrols along Old Military Road in St George’s.
Police stopped the rider over his conduct but allowed him to leave with a verbal warning.
However, later checks revealed the rider did not have a valid driver’s licence and had an outstanding court-issued warrant for his arrest over a similar offence.
Police located the rider on York Street, where they informed him of the warrant and plans to arrest him.
The police spokesman said the man became “verbally aggressive and physically resistant,” which resulted in a struggle with officers.
One of the officers drew a taser gun, but the motorcyclist eventually became compliant without the taser being discharged and it was eventually reholstered.
However, the spokesman said that, once the man was arrested and transported to the Hamilton Police Station via the officers’ vehicle, he became combative again and assaulted the officers.
Both officers attended the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to minor injuries and were later discharged.
The spokesman added that “significant damage” was caused to the police vehicle during the incident.
The motorcyclist did not report any injuries.
The man remains in police custody while inquiries continue.
He is expected to appear before the courts in due course.
