Rain forces cancellation of T20 World Cup qualifiers

Rain ensured that there was no play on the opening day of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub-regional Qualifier at North Field, National Sports Centre, on Sunday.

The fixtures between Bermuda and Bahamas and Panama and Belize both fell prey to the inclement weather, with each team receiving five points.

“We share the points because nobody played today, which is unfortunate,” Bermuda coach Cal Waldron told The Royal Gazette.

“But that’s the way the day went, so strategically we look at moving forward; how we assess the matches and play the matches differently. We need to look at net run-rate and all that stuff, trying to get ahead and stay ahead on that side of things.”

Bermuda were originally scheduled to play Brazil in their tournament opener on Sunday but were pitted against Bahamas instead as a result of their South American opponents arriving late on island.

“Brazil had trouble with travel issues, something beyond their control, so the organisers gave them a bye,” Waldron said.

“We ended up having to play Bahamas but it didn’t come off. Hopefully tomorrow the weather is good enough so everybody gets to play cricket and we get to showcase the skills and get the result that we need.”

Bermuda will face Belize in the opening contest on Monday (10.30am), which will be followed by the match between Brazil and Panama (3pm).

The national squad is being led by captain Terryn Fray and also includes vice-captain Derrick Brangman, Delray Rawlins, Sinclair Smith, Onias Bascome, Jonté Smith, Dominic Sabir, Isaiah O’Brien, Zeko Burgess, Luke Horan, Zerai Tomlinson, Chare Smith, Nzari Paynter and Charles Trott.

Bermuda will be hoping to capitalise on home advantage in the tournament, which forms part of the qualification pathway for the World Cup in 2028.

The five competing nations will face off in a round-robin format with only the group winner advancing to the next stage of qualifying.

Bermuda Cricket Board has urged the public to come out and support the national team throughout the competition. Tickets for all matches are on sale through ptix.bm.

Tournament information, fixtures, results and the latest updates can be found on the BCB’s and ICC’s official channels.
