Hayward discusses youth employment progress
The Department of Workforce Development helped more than 170 Bermudian students get jobs or internships this summer, MPs heard today.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, said 102 college and university students are participating in summer employment and 72 high school pupils are engaged in internships thanks to the ministry’s Youth Employment Programme.
The minister added that participants continuously receive coaching throughout the summer and participated in several workshops at the National Youth Conference.
He explained: “Preparing young Bermudians for the future of work also requires investment in emerging skills.
“Accordingly, the department expanded its employability training by introducing courses in artificial intelligence for personal and professional productivity, workplace communication, emotional intelligence and resilience.”
Mr Hayward also discussed the Bermuda Job Connect digital platform that launched on April 6.
The platform, which replaces the Bermuda Job Board, provides planning tools, labour market information, enhanced recruitment for employers and other resources.
MPs heard that 1,199 people registered, 167 jobs were advertised, 1,509 applications were submitted, 130 online courses were ongoing and 442 job seekers were using the platform since it went live.
Mr Hayward said: “The department will continue enhancing the platform by expanding employer participation, strengthening workforce analytics, increasing online learning opportunities and further integrating apprenticeship and career development services into one seamless workforce ecosystem.”
