Kaden Hopkins showed great determination to finish second in stage eight of the Tour Cycliste International de la Guadeloupe despite crashing and breaking his collarbone during the individual time-trial on Friday.

Hopkins was on course to record his second victory of the tour before he suffered the misfortune on a fast downhill corner. The Bermudian got back on his feet, and with a spare bike from his team’s car completed the race, where he finished two seconds behind Alex Doltaire.

After the race, Hopkins, who races for Belgian team Atom6-Cycleur de Luxe-Auto Stroo, was taken by ambulance to hospital. Today, he is heading to Spain for surgery.

It was the same injury that the 26-year-old suffered in February, which resulted in five screws and a metal plate inserted to fix a displaced fractured collarbone.

“After such a long season of setbacks, the shape was finally there, the results were starting to come with it, but sometimes things are just out of your control,” Hopkins posted on Instagram.

“After a dumb crash in the last descent of the TT on Friday, a recurrence of the same collarbone I fractured in February is just the next bump in the road of this season.

“Heading back to Spain for surgery next week, then I’ll be back, but my season’s not over yet.

“Thank you to everyone for all the messages, I’m sorry if I don’t get back to you directly, but your support means a lot.

“Thank you to @nocbermuda for the memories in CAC Games last week, as well as the staff and especially all my boys from @atom6_cycleurdeluxe_autostroo for a great Tour in Guadeloupe. Looking forward to seeing the boys finish it out strong.”
