For many people, fitness means a treadmill, weight machines or a workout class inside four walls. But according to Dave Wolffe, owner of Fit4Life Gym, some of the best places to exercise in Bermuda aren't found inside a gym at all.

They're found on the Railway Trail, in the ocean, along the beach and anywhere the island's natural beauty encourages people to get moving.

“As a personal trainer and owner of Fit4Life Gym, I've spent years helping people become stronger, healthier and more confident. But some of my favourite workouts don't happen inside the gym — they happen right here in Bermuda.”

Whether he's walking the Railway Trail, snorkelling at Church Bay or Tobacco Bay, swimming at John Smith's Bay or simply enjoying a beach walk, Mr Wolffe believes movement should be something people enjoy for life — not something they feel forced to do.

“Bermuda is one of the most beautiful places in the world, so why not make the most of it? Getting outdoors combines exercise with fresh air, sunshine and nature, which can do wonders for both your physical and mental health.”

He encourages people to rethink what counts as exercise.

“I always tell people that fitness doesn't have to happen inside four walls. A walk along the Railway Trail, a swim in the ocean or even a relaxing beach walk can all contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy what our island naturally offers.”

For those who struggle to stick to an exercise routine, he says the answer is often finding activities that don't feel like workouts at all.

Some of his favourites include walking the Railway Trail, beach walks, swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding and beach volleyball.

“The great thing about these activities is that they don't always feel like a workout. You're enjoying Bermuda, spending time with family or friends and before you know it you've been active for an hour. The best exercise is often the one you enjoy enough to keep doing consistently.”

While the physical benefits of exercise are well documented, Mr Wolffe believes spending time outdoors also has a powerful effect on mental wellbeing.

“As a business owner, life can be busy and stressful. I've found that getting outside helps me reset mentally. Whether it's an early morning walk, a swim in the ocean or even reading my book in a local park, I always come back feeling calmer, more focused and ready for the day.”

He even recommends something as simple as spending a few minutes barefoot on the grass or sand. “Nature has a way of helping us slow down while still keeping us active.”

For anyone who hasn't exercised in a while, his advice is to keep expectations realistic.

“Start small. You don't need to run five miles or complete an intense workout. Begin with a 20- to 30-minute walk a few days a week. Explore a new trail, walk along the beach or take a gentle swim.”

He says one of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to do too much too soon.

“Movement should be enjoyable, not punishment. When you enjoy being active, you're much more likely to make it part of your lifestyle. Often people try to go hard in the beginning and become discouraged.”

Mr Wolffe recommends exercising during the cooler parts of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, drinking plenty of water before, during and after exercise, wearing sunscreen and paying attention to how your body feels.

“The goal isn't to push through the heat. It's to enjoy being active safely.”

Asked to describe his perfect active Bermuda summer day, his answer combines fitness with everything that makes island life special.

“It starts with an early morning workout, followed by a healthy breakfast. Then I'd head out for a walk on the Railway Trail, cool off with a swim or some snorkelling, enjoy lunch by the water and finish the evening with a sunset beach barbecue and family activity games outdoors.”

Before summer comes to an end, there's one activity he believes everyone should experience at least once.

“I'd encourage everyone to try snorkelling. Bermuda's crystal-clear waters and marine life are world-class, and snorkelling is something people of almost any age and fitness level can enjoy. It's relaxing, it's a surprisingly good full-body workout and it's a wonderful reminder of how fortunate we are to live here.”

Mr Wolffe offered one piece of advice for those who think they lack time for exercise.

“Fitness isn't about finding more time, t's about making the most of the places and opportunities already around you. In Bermuda, the outdoors is one of our greatest gyms. “Every beach, every trail, every hill and every stretch of coastline is an invitation to move. Take it. Movement should be something you enjoy, not something you endure.”
