Hockey legend Mario Lemieux’s son qualifies for Bermuda PGA event
Austin Lemieux, the son of hockey legend Mario Lemieux, has qualified for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The 30-year-old amateur shot 66, the number his iconic father wore on the back of his jersey, at the Country Club of Winter Haven in Florida on Monday to qualify for his first appearance on the PGA Tour on island next week.
Mario Lemieux is a National Hockey League Hall of Famer, with the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar scoring 690 and making 1,033 assists during his stellar career. He famously chose the No 66 in homage to Wayne Gretsky’s No 99, flipping the digits upside down.
Now his son will attempt to carve his own slice of sporting immortality in Bermuda. Austin Lemieux played hockey at Arizona State University but decided to pursue golf.
He won a Pennsylvania mid-amateur championship in September before adding victory on the Minor League Golf Tour in Florida this month.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship qualifier on Monday offered four spots in the main event with Lemieux joined by Adam Long (64), Matthew Anderson (66) and Willie Mack III in earning places in the PGA Tour event.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship takes place at Port Royal Golf Course next week from October 22 to 25.
