Boulevard's blazing start

Boulevard made it two wins out of two in the new season as this come-from-behind win at St. David's sent Rangers crashing to their second Premier Division loss.

Boulevard were again without both of their main goalkeepers because of injuries as Kimwander Walker took over.

Rangers were off to a good start with an 11th minute goal which broke the deadlock. Craig Darrell flighted in a cross from the right which was too high for Walker as it went over his head to Herbie Dillas at the far post who scrambled it over the line.

But it was Boulevard who came the closest to taking the lead as early as the second minute when Stevie Wade followed up on a Vernon Eve free kick to smash a shot against the crossbar.

After their opening goal, Rangers were guilty of not testing the inexperienced Walker enough as Boulevard began to create some chances of their own. They equalised in the 27th minute from the penalty spot through Kenny Darrell after Oscar Riley fouled Leroy Stevens inside the box.

Dillas went close to regaining the lead for Rangers two minutes before the break when he beat the advancing Walker to a through ball from Donnie Charles but poked his first time effort wide of the near post.

Rangers did have the ball in the net a second time on the hour but this effort -- Nashun Smith converting Darrell's cross -- was ruled out for offside.

Then, after another Rangers move broke down, Boulevard made them pay with a quick break down the left which resulted in Shakia Crockwell beating the emerging Randy Darrell to a ball on the corner of the box and lobbing it over his head and into an unguarded goal for what turned out to be the winning strike.

Boulevard almost added an insurance goal two minutes from the end when former Somerset striker Lamaul Crofton opened the defence with a cross from the right only to see substitute Troy Smith shoot wide of the near post from inside the box.

Rangers made four changes to their team which drew with Vasco in the Martonmere Cup in midweek, as Darrell had hit first outing of the season in goal and Pernell Brangman and Sheridan Ming were also included.

Boulevard, whom many predicted would struggle again this season after the loss of some key players, have given themselves a tremendous boost with two wins.

They stand on six points along with PHC and Devonshire Colts.

Dill saved the day when he netted after 86 minutes, slamming the ball home from 16 yards out after a rebound fell his way.

With defeat seemingly staring them in the face, Trojans worked hard in the final stages, forcing the Vasco defence to reel for the first time since the opening half when they dominated but failed to score.

Vasco goalkeeper and skipper Tim Figureido had dived brilliantly to his right to save a sensational header from Nasir Wade, but the rebound went to Dill who made good with his shot.

Somerset had fallen behind to a goal by Kuma Smith after 68 minutes, Smith scoring during a quick counter attack after the Trojans attack had broken down once again following a good build-up.

However, Somerset had enough of the play in the first half to gain a two-goal lead by the interval, but too often good approach work ended with either misdirected passing, poor finishing or lack of shooting ideas.

With Trojans making some progress up front and Vasco accomplishing little with top striker Dwight Basden often mastered by centre-back and skipper Karl Roberts and substitute Tafari Mallory, the goalkeepers saw very little action.

Vasco were so punchless during the early stages that they were unable to test new goalkeeper Leslie Trew who moved from his centre-half spot to deputise for the injured Keeman Tucker after just 15 minutes.

The Trojans' first chance came after 21 minutes when 16-year-old Nasir Wade brilliantly volleyed a cross from Dill that sailed just over the bar.

But the rest of the half proved frustrating as there were several occasions when the forwards were robbed of possession when they should have got shots off.

And they also made it easy for the defence by placing high crosses which goalkeeper Figureido gathered without difficulty.

Vasco on the other hand managed only limited attacks with Keith Jennings hurrying long-range shots over on two occasions.

When play re-started the Trojans were unable to build the same edge they had gained earlier and often played second fiddle to their opponents.

But with 15 minutes left the west enders found their touch and determination brought them dividends.

Reversal of fortune: Referee Richard Knight brandishes the red card in the direction of Dandy Town's Sean Smith who puts his head in his hands after palming the ball off his own line. However, after consultation with a linesman who said the ball had crossed the line for a PHC goal, Knight reversed the decision and Smith returned to complete the game. PHC won 3-1.
