Striker Russell turns down Hogges for ISL

Former Bermuda Hogges striker Antwan Russell (right) has turned down the chance to play for them this season, opting to turn out in the Island Soccer League (ISL) instead.

Antwan Russell was the first pick in this season's Island Soccer League (ISL) Superdraft after snubbing an offer to play for Bermuda Hogges.

The Somerset Eagles striker, who played for the Hogges last season, was selected by Kings coach Marvin Belboda at the draft which was held at Grotto Bay last Friday night.

Russell is no stranger to the ISL having won the title with Andrew Bascome's Storm in 2008 when he was also the league's top scorer, MVP and All-Star MVP.

Prolific St.George's striker Jahron Dickinson was the second player selected in the draft with the Apex snapping him up, while Sean Perinchief, Kaiya Darrell, and Ralph Bean jr. went to Titans, Knight, Arsenal as the third, fourth and fifth picks respectively.

Rather then suit up for the Hogges, Russell said he chose to return to the ISL for personal reasons after a one-year hiatus.

"It's always a pleasure going as the number one in a draft," said Russell, whose Eagles lost to Devonshire Cougars in last weekend's FA Cup final.

"I'm happy to be playing in the ISL again and will be trying to win another ring.

"I want to pick up where I left off in 2008.

"Last year I was with the Hogges and this year I want to win a ring with the Kings.

"The Hogges had given me a chance to play for them again this year, but I turned it down due to personal reasons and I chose to play in the ISL.

"I'd like to say that the Storm can certainly win it, my team can win it as well, along with the defending champions (Union) who will be favourites."

Bascome's Storm, are also sure to be among the favourites to claim this season's title after picking up a host of match winners in the draft while also keeping hold of their crown jewels.

Their coach chose to protect Raymond Beach, Raymond Burgess, Kevin Lambe and Corey Dowling, while adding Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington, Chris Caisey, Randy Robinson, Dmitri Butterfield, Jason Simons, and two of his Robin Hood players, Grant McKellar and Teddy Terceira.

For midfield powerhouse Terceira the new season, which starts next month, will be an exciting challenge to a new format of the game.

"I don't know what to expect as I haven't experienced this yet but I'm excited to try a different brand of football and work with coach Bascome again," he said.

"Every team is starting from scratch, each team will have the same record at the beginning of the season so it should be competitive, so we have to go out and prove our worth on the field.

"Obviously we have big names on our side like Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington, Raymond Beach and others, but we also have good role players such as myself and others that will allow us to work as a team."

The surprise of the draft was the inclusion of former Manchester City striker Shaun Goater to the Apex. Goater's team-mates include Daniel Adams, Shakir Smith, Kaiwon Dill, David Signor, Jahron Dickinson, Quincy Aberdeen, Carlos Canales, Jenson Rogers, Jason Williams, Randy Spence, Wolde Place.
