Extros' `old-timers' upset leaders
off the biggest shock of the Commercial season with a 1-0 upset of seemingly invincible Key West Rangers over the weekend.
After falling to a late winner a week previously at St. John's Field, Extros, playing on home soil, reversed the result the second time around. Lloyd Telford, making a rare appearance, proved the hero for the west enders, scoring what turned out to be the winner 10 minutes into the second half.
It was the first defeat in 14 outings for Key West, who are still odds on for promotion from the `B' Division. The win placed Extros in prime position to earn the other of the two promotion spots, as they trail second placed St.
George's All-Stars by just two points, but have five matches in hand.
All-Stars squandered ground by falling to defeat at the hands of Wolves Pack during an exciting contest at Wellington Oval that saw the visitors come away with a 4-3 triumph.
Casey Burgess made a successful return to Wolves' starting line-up, netting twice, while Keith DeShields and Germaine Burt added single strikes.
For St. George's, Charles Wade scored two goals and Cal Rayner one.
Exiles moved back into contention with a merciless 9-2 hammering of Dockyard Falcons, Craig Outerbridge and Craig Critchlow scoring two goals, while Ian McLeod, Mike Trott, Shannon Burchall and an Anthony Burchall own goal accounted for the others.
Burchall also scored in more conventional fashion for his side, as did Joe Pacheco.
In other affairs, Valley and Pest Control battled to a 2-2 draw at Shelly Bay, while neither Prison Officers nor Devonshire Lions showed up for their scheduled contest at Malabar.
Division `A' leaders Robin Hood exacted revenge for their defeat at the hands of PHC Raiders, pummelling the latter 5-2 at Somerset Cricket Club. Paul Towlson led the charge with a hat-trick, while single strikes by Derek Stapley and Jarlath McCabe helped assure victory. Cal Waldron and Brian Anderson replied for Raiders.
Hood suffered the loss of goalkeeper Andrew Jekyll, who was sent off by referee Jose Pimental for deliberately handling the ball outside the penalty area.
MR Onions moved into sole possession of second place with a 3-1 triumph over Devonshire Colts All-Stars. Gary Wilson twice found the target and Martin Ford came off the bench to score.
Armel Thomas tallied for the losers, who were officially relegated with the defeat.
Lobster Pot kept their faint title hopes alive after overcoming a severe challenge from North Village Rams.
Pot eventually won the match 4-3, but suffered more than a few scares in the dying stages when Rams netted a pair of late goals to draw close.
Scorers for pot were Alan Moore, Jim McLaren, Saleem Mukudem and Alan Mackie, while Ross Lambe (two) and Allan Smith replied for Rams.
BAA Wanderers thrashed Fire Service 7-0 at home, largely behind a Tom Gribbon hat-trick, with Dave Lawler scoring twice and single goals coming from Stevie Black and Norman Bradford.
