Bermuda-born Ronan Kane won a bronze medal in the high jump at an under-17 international meet in Stoke-on-Trent recently.
Representing Ireland, the birthplace of his parents, Kane, 16, won a bronze medal with with a personal best jump of 2.1 metres...the first time he has cleared the two-metre barrier. Kane was part of an eight man field which involved participants from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.
Kane again represents Ireland in Somerset, England, in the 48th Student Games against athletes from all over Europe today and tomorrow.
BOWLING BOW Reginald Tavares rolled a top game and series of 198 and 529 to lead fourth-place Squirrels to a 3-1 win over Whales in Fishbowl Summer League action.
Squirrels also topped the team high game list, rolling an 808 and second high series of 2,284. Supporting Tavares on the individual list was Clifford Maxwell with his 190 second high game and 485 second series.
Cathee Tumbridge topped the women's list with her top series and game 213 and 518 for second-placed Sardines in their 3-1 win over Damselfish.
Pikes beat Mullets 3-1 and rolled the top team series 2,335 and second high game 791 in the process while Mullets had a 2,270 third high series and 785 third game. Marilyn Simmons led Pikes with her 472 third high series while Lee Griffiths had a 179 game for the losers.
Margaye Dean claimed the second high game and series, 191 and 496, as leaders Parrotfish beat last-placed Catfish 3-1. Ron Birdsey of Catfish rolled a 433 third high series.
GOLF GLF Michael Sims finished in grand style at the Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego on the weekend when he fired a final round of two-under-par 70 to finish tied for 17th place in the 15-17 age group.
Sims' final round included three birdies and an eagle to give him the best finish ever by a Bermudian in this age group.
The tournament was won by a Japanese player with a four round total of 11-under-par 277 while Sims four round total was 296.
SOCCER SOC Devonshire Colts won the Kenny Thompson Seven-A-Side soccer tournament last week when they beat Frontline 3-1 in the final at Southampton Glebe.
Shannon Burgess, named most valuable player in both the tournament and final, scored for the Colts goals along with Mark Ray and Keemon Lawrence. George Liburd replied from the penalty spot for Frontline.
Colts also won the fair play award while Ricardo Tucker of Revelations was named top goalkeeper. Brenton Harris of Quality Street and Roger Brangman of Revelations were the top scorers with five goals while Lamont Stone (Team Chucky) and Sergio Goater (Crossroads) each had four.
A training session for the national youth team is being held at National Stadium today. The following players are asked to report at 4.30 with white jerseys.
