Wanderers widen the gap

week after three of the top four teams suffered defeats, allowing champions BAA Wanderers to open up a three-point lead.

The leadership also changed in Group B where previously unbeaten Prison Officers went down to second-placed Forties 3-2.

Wanderers, level on points with Robin Hood before the weekend, moved into sole possession of the top spot after a 1-0 win over St. George's All-Stars at Wellington Oval. Gary Flood scored the only goal late in the game.

Robin Hood suffered their second defeat when they went down 3-2 to a Spinning Wheel team who won for only the second time in the league. Chris Furbert, Des Minors and Quinton Ming scored for Wheel while Jarlath McCabe and Allan Mooney replied for Hood.

Lobster Pot and Fire Service, third and fourth in the standings, also went down. Pot lost 2-0 to Mariners, for whom Craig Dixon netted twice. Former leaders Fire Service were beaten 3-2 by MR Onions despite Ranay Boyles' two goals. Gary Wilson, Will Gonsalves and Joe Roberts scored for Onions.

The other match in the division was also decided by the odd goal in five with Ireland Rangers beating North Village Rams 3-2.

Donald Madeiros, Troy Berkeley and Keith Bremar netted for Rangers while Allan Fray and Wayne Pimental replied for the Rams who were without Kenny Thompson who played for the Red Devils in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Prison Officers were knocked out of first place in Group B when they were handed their first defeat by Forties, 3-2. Steven Garratt led Forties to victory with two goals while Derek Thomas scored the other. M.Rawlins and D.Leader replied for Officers.

Forties now lead the division by two points and with a game in hand, having won all eight of their matches.

Somerset Extros remained in third place with a 4-3 win over Devonshire Lions.

Some familiar names from the past got on the scoresheet for Extros, with Steven Riley, Dwayne Richardson, Everett Wellman and George Brangman scoring for the west enders. Kevin Hodgson and James Raynor (2) replied for the Lions.

Wolves hammered Valley 9-3 with Jeff Cameron netting four times, Daniel Stovell three and Kevin Hendrickson once. Berwin Thomas, John Parfitt and Sean Smith replied for Valley.

Bottom team Exiles earned a 3-3 draw against Bermuda Pest Control with Fred Savage, Johnny Simoes and Allan Johnson scoring for Exiles and Ernest Dillas, Christopher Davies and Lesline Mills replying for Pest Control.

Belco won by default over Devonshire All-Stars who were short-handed for their home match.

Bermuda's Under-17 national soccer squad are expected to start training this week for the CONCACAF Youth World Cup next year, according to the BFA.

Contrary to a report in Friday's Royal Gazette , the team have not yet met for training nor has the month for the tournament been finalised, although it is anticipated that it will be held after the Shell Cup in Cayman Islands in April.

The Youth World Cup will see two groups of four countries competing in Jamaica and El Salvador.
