A chance to grill the Premier will get its premiere today in the House of Assembly.

David Burt will field off-the-cuff questions from the floor of the House of Assembly in a 30-minute session, once a month, for the first time.

Premier’s Question Time is a departure for the traditional parliamentary questions, where ministers have up to nine days to deliver an answer. The new arrangement will allow each MP one question, although the Opposition leader can ask up to three questions, on the second Friday of each month.

The question period, an adaptation of the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions in Britain’s House of Commons, was first proposed in November last year.

MPs will also debate legislation designed to amend legal aid and procedures for families to resolve their disputes through mediation.

Other Bills will deal with the modernisation of the land title registry and legislation to improve protection of animals.

Ministerial statements will include one from Mr Burt on the regulation of cryptocurrency initial coin offerings.

Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, will give updates on the prison service and the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

Jamahl Simmons, the tourism minister, will speak on the 2018 tourism plan and Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education and Workforce Development, will talk about this year’s scholarships programme and policies for administrative leave.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, will deliver a statement on farming in Bermuda.
