Neighbourhood grocery store totally refurbished

approximately thirty years ago. Sold to Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Mendonca in July last year, the neighbourhood grocery store on Serpentine Road in Pembroke has been totally revamped. Co-owner Mr. Mendonca said the supermarket's name was changed last month. "We planned to change the name from day one but we had to get the produce first and clean up the store,'' he said. "We wanted to create a new image and we wanted people to see the difference.'' Indeed, the difference is apparent -- the market has undergone a complete interior facelift. The owners have installed a new floor, painted the walls and relocated shelves. Also, two new refrigerators as well as some new shelving units were purchased. The store now accommodates additional produce, yet it is more spacious than before, said Mr. Mendonca. A fresh meat section has been added to the store. And a new multi-stacker fridge displays the meats, he said, adding that the market carries all basic fresh meats including Black Angus beef, chicken, pork, lamb and fish. Said co-owner Mrs. Delia Mendonca: "We're looking to get a butcher. And then we may expand the meat section and have daily specials etc. "We'll let him try out different things,'' he said.

The Garden Market still carries much of what the old Terra's had in stock including their popular Portuguese dried and canned foods as well as Mello's chourico brought in fresh from the United States. "The only things we took out were household items like buckets, pots and pans -- we kept the mops and brooms,'' said Mr. Mendonca. However, the owners have added much more to their line of inventory, most notably fresh fruits and vegetables and fresh meat.

"Everything is fresh, it all comes out of the garden,'' said Mr. Mendonca.

"Everyone seems to be on a health kick these days -- they're into fresh produce -- so we're hoping the name will attract people. "It's coming along pretty well so far,'' he added. "But getting customers in the store has not been easy. I think advertising through word of mouth has helped -- it's always the best advertising. "People are coming in and they see that we really do have a lot to offer.'' The Bermudian magazine attested to the merits of The Garden Market this year with its "Best of Bermuda 1995'' award -- a sign that customers can indeed find just about anything they need in the newly renovated grocery store. It's now a full-service neighbourhood supermarket, said Mr.
