Shooting is the latest tragedy to strike family

Shot and injured: Jeremiah Dill, seen here in a 2006 file picture, is recovering after being shot at while riding a motorbike along Parson's Road, Pembroke yesterday. In the past few years he has lost is father, a brother and sister in tragic circumstances.

A family was left reeling yesterday after a 27-year-old was shot in broad daylight on Parsons Road.

Jeremiah Dill was treated for an injury to his "lower extremities" and released from hospital that afternoon.

Police said last night that three men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Relatives were too upset to be interviewed at length yesterday the shooting marks the most recent in a series of tragedies to befall the family.

Mr. Dill's brother, Edward "Sleepy" Dill, was stabbed to death by his girlfriend in 2006. The following year his sister, Ruth Binns, was killed by her boyfriend.

Their father Alan Dill was found dead, albeit of natural causes, in the doorway of a Hamilton store in 2009.

A family member said: "After his brother, his sister and his father, it seems like it's a little too much sometimes.

"It's a shock. I just wish all of this would stop."

Mr. Dill was shot while riding his motorbike near the One Stop Variety store on Parsons Road, Pembroke around 10.30 a.m.

According to Police the Pembroke resident was shot in the "lower extremities" by another man also riding a motorbike.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment and released. A relative told The Royal Gazette: "He's fine. He's OK, and that is really what matters right now.

"But it's heartbreaking, especially after everything else that we've gone through."

Yesterday's shooting is the most recent in a series of daylight firearms incidents in recent weeks.

David Godwin was seriously wounded after he was shot near popular Pembroke eatery Art Mel's Spicy Dicy on September 23 at 5.30 p.m.

The shooting followed two firearms incidents earlier that day a car was damaged after shots were fired near the First Church of God in Pembroke at 11.30 a.m. Police reported that men on a motorcycle brandished a gun on Court Street six minutes later.

Area residents were yesterday outraged by the further act of violence.

One man told this newspaper he heard three gunshots from his bedroom.

"It sounded like it was right outside my window," said the Pembroke resident, who did not want to be named..

"I just got up, made sure everyone in my house was safe, and poked my head out. [Mr. Dill] was laying in the middle of the road next to a bike."

The man said he was shocked the incident happened only a short distance from Victor Scott Primary School where Kimwandae Walker was murdered on Good Friday.

"There's too many children around here, too many elderly people. They don't respect anything. They have to stop," he said.

According to the man, the area used to be a popular spot to hang out but since the recent outbreak of violence people are staying inside.

Another resident told The Royal Gazette: "This is crazy. It's madness.

"They're going to keep on shooting until some kid gets killed, and even then it won't stop."

A Police spokesman said the shooting is now under "active investigation" and three men have been arrested.

"Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477."

Police from the Serious Crime cordon off an area along Parsons Road near Two Way Deep Dale after a 27-year-old Pembroke man was shot in the lower torso while sitting on or near a motorbike.
