Gunman demanded drugs during home raid, court hears

A man described how a gunman burst into his bedroom demanding he hand over his drugs.Cori Broadbelt said the gunman’s accomplice was armed with a machete and threatened to chop up his dog.The men eventually made off with marijuana, $500 in cash and jewellery, Supreme Court heard.Mr Broadbelt gave evidence yesterday in the trial of three men accused of committing the armed burglary at his home on Middle Road, Devonshire.Terrence Christopher and Tyrone Pedro, 22, and Shayne James, 19, deny aggravated burglary and using an imitation firearm.Mr Broadbelt, 41, told the jury he was in his bedroom with his dog just after dark on April 2 when he heard a commotion. Two men with scarves over their faces then entered his bedroom.One, who he described as being around 6ft 2in and dressed in black, pulled out a gun and pointed it at his head saying “where’s the weed, where’s the weed?”.He said the man with the machete, who he described as thin and around 5ft 9 ins, “threatened to chop my dog up”.Mr Broadbelt went on to explain: “At that point I gave them everything I had — my weed and money and they took my girlfriend’s jewellery off the dresser.”He estimated that he “probably gave them about a quarter of marijuana” and “about $500”.He told the jury the only light at the time of the attack was provided by his television, so it was “pretty dark”.He described the gun as silver, and looking like a semi-automatic pistol. He also described how his $700 PlayStation games console was stolen from the house during the burglary.Asked by prosecutor Takiyah Burgess how he felt about what happened, Mr Broadbelt replied “I was angry” but added, “I wasn’t scared though”.Ms Burgess told the jury Mr Broadbelt participated in an identification parade in which he was shown pictures that included Mr Pedro’s.He picked a different individual out of the line-up.Mr Broadbelt was living with his girlfriend, Rhonda Wilkinson, 43, at the time of the home invasion. Ms Wilkinson testified in the trial last week, telling how three men took part in the crime, which happened when her two children were in the house.She said a girl knocked on the door, and when she opened it, three men ran in. One of them threatened her with a machete.When Ms Wilkinson was cross-examined by defence lawyers yesterday morning, she admitted knowing there were drugs in the house.The case continues.
