Six Bermudians have been awarded scholarships by the Garden Club of Bermuda this year.

The awards will assist them in their studies at accredited universities and colleges in the UK and Canada.

The recipients are: Rachel Antonition, Ryan Branco, Ronald Burchall, Claire Grenfell, Lucy Hollis and Ryan Terceira.

Pursuing their studies in Britain are: Miss Antonition, who is studying landscape architecture at Kingston University; Mr. Branco and Miss Hollis, who are studying landscape architecture at the University of Gloucester; and Mr. Burchall, who is studying environmental science at Oxford Brookes University.

Studying in Ontario, Canada are Miss Grenfell, a previous Garden Club scholarship recipient, who is pursuing a bachelor of science (Hons.) degree at Queen's University in Kingston, while Mr. Terceira is preparing to become a landscape technician, which includes horticulture, landscape design and construction, at Niagara College.

Sally Godet, chairperson of the Club's scholarship committee, told the recipients that they were "following in the footsteps of some very interesting people who have received Garden Club scholarships in the past".

She praised previous recipient Stuart Hayward of BEST as "a marvelous environmentalist" and fellow awardee Tom Wadson as "the biggest organic farmer on the Island".

Other past recipients include Government Plant Protection Lab scientists Claire Jessey and TerryLynn Thompson, tree surgeon Fiona Doe and Vanese Flood Gordon, manager of Government's recycling plant.

Mrs. Godet also praised the efforts of former scholarship recipients Stephen Furbert and Clark Tear "who went as mature students to Writtle College in the UK and are now Parks superintendents" and Sam Fraser Smith, a student at the University of Queensland in Australia "who may well save the lives of many people in Africa and the Far East with his scientific work on staple banana production".

To raise funds for future scholarships, the Club will be holding special events in November and May.
