Bailey’s Bay have named Derrick Brangman as a colt for the Eastern Counties first-round match against champions St David’s at Lord’s tomorrow.

Brangman, now eligible to play in the competition after qualifying as a league player with the club, is the only colt for the challengers who will look to avenge two losses already to St David’s this season.

He will form a five-man bowling attack that includes seam bowlers Kyle Hodsoll, Zeko Burgess, Malachi Jones and captain Rodney Trott who will share the spinning duties with Brangman.

Tre Govia, who switched to medium pace this season because of a shoulder injury that hampered his spin bowling, has been included primarily as a batsman to give Bay more depth.

“With the situation we’ve been in, [Govia] in the team as a batsman mainly, as we’ve been finding runs hard to come by,” Irving Romaine, the Bay coach, said. “We have tried to lengthen the batting order as far as possible. It’s a gamble you have to take in the Eastern Counties.

“The same five attack bowlers that we have been using all season — Kyle, Derrick, Malachi, Zeko and Rodney — may all have to bowl over ten overs as there is no limit in the Eastern Counties.

“We’ve been struggling with runs so we chose to lengthen our batting as that’s been our problem, not getting enough runs on the board.”

As expected Bay have also included former club player Tre Manders of Western Stars who will be a key man in the batting, probably at No 3.

Romaine said the batting order will depend on whether the team bats first or is chasing a total. The first team will be allowed to bat 65 of the 118 overs allocated for the day.

“I’m very confident, after the result on Sunday [against Southampton Rangers] it looked a lot better,” Romaine said. “It’s always good to have a victory, and with some confidence behind you, going into this game.

“Everybody is feeling good about themselves, Stephen [Outerbridge], one of our main run-getters, had a good knock of 75 which is a positive.”

Romaine has been following the weather forecast which is predicting showers on Saturday morning. Last year Bay drew with St David’s in the final round.

“That would obviously be a damper if the game got shortened,” he said. “We haven’t decided on the batting order yet, it all comes down to whether we have to chase or set a total. We’ll work it out on the day, we just have to come up with one more run than St David’s!”
