Fit-again Tucker hoping for return

On the mend: Tucker visits his physiotherapist today (File photograph)

A visit to his physiotherapist today will determine whether experienced all-rounder Janeiro Tucker makes his first appearance of the season this weekend.

The Southampton Rangers captain has been recovering from a shoulder surgery.

He has recently returned to training and could turn out in either the first round of the Western Counties against Willow Cuts tomorrow or against Somerset Cricket Club in the Premier Division on Sunday.

“I’ll probably have a go on Saturday and then see how I feel on Sunday,” Tucker said yesterday.

“I’ve been doing a little something, not any bowling, just batting. I have to go to my physio tomorrow and she’ll let me know.”

Tucker delayed surgery last year so he could represent Bermuda in the ICC World Cricket League Division Four tournament in Los Angeles in November last year.

He has watched from the sidelines this season as cousin Kwame Tucker has led Rangers in his absence, winning two matches in the Premier Division so far.

“I’m enjoying it, but you still get that feeling that you want to do something,” Tucker said.

Rangers begin the defence of their counties title at White Hill Field. Last season they called on Derrick Brangman and Dion Stovell as guest players.

Both played as guest players in the Central Counties last weekend, Stovell for Western Stars and Brangman for challengers Tuff Dogs.

Stars are also in action tomorrow, playing North Village in the final, but Stovell has opted to play in the Western Counties for his former team. Stars will again have Treadwell Gibbons as a guest player, having justified his inclusion by smashing 166 as Stars posted 323 for eight against Tuff Dogs last weekend.

“I don’t think anybody begrudged him going to Cleveland County, I know where his heart is,” Arnold Manders, the Stars coach, said of Gibbons’s decision to join Cleveland on a late transfer. Ironically, Gibbons will play against Stars on Sunday at Wellington Oval as Cleveland go in search of their first win in the league.

Village have included two Bailey’s Bay players, Terryn Fray and Pierre Smith, as guest players for their Central Counties final.

The Central Counties match starts at 10am and will be 55 overs per side with no fielding or bowling restrictions.

Sunday’s top match in the Premier Division will pit champions St David’s against Bailey’s Bay at Lord’s in what will be a preview to the Eastern Counties clash on July 22.

Bay ended three losses at home with victory over Stars last weekend, giving the team a confidence boost ahead of the meeting with St David’s who are running away with the league after four straight victories. St David’s lead the standings with 58 points, while Rangers in second place have 32.

“It will always be a good match between us, some of the better players on the island going up against each other, so it’ll be very interesting,” Romaine said.

“It’s at St David’s so hopefully we’ll get a glimpse of what the wicket will be like for county. The bonus that we have going into it is that everybody who plays for us is eligible to play for us in Eastern Counties. St David’s don’t have that luxury, Dion, [Kevin] Hurdle and the wicketkeeper [Ajuan Lamb] can’t play.

“Derrick is eligible to play for us this year and Pierre Smith is also eligible.”

St George’s and PHC will meet in a top-of-the-table clash in the First Division at PHC Field.

Willow Cuts return to White Hill Field to face Somerset Bridge while Devonshire Recreation Club host Flatts.
