Darrell’s double destroys Wolves

Dandy Town 2 Wolves 0

A late brace from Seion Darrell ensured Dandy Town safe passage into the Friendship Trophy proper as they saw off Wolves at St John’s Field yesterday.

Darrell’s goals in the 70th and 90th minutes confirmed what many thought would be the next round tie — a showdown with champions Devonshire Cougars.

The two sides played in the final of this competition last year.

“It was always going to be a tough fight out there and we needed to stick to what we know and get the job done and that’s what we did,” said Darrell.

“No one likes to lose, and at home today we wanted to make sure we got the result to put us in the next round.”

After what was a dull, first-half stalemate, it didn’t take long for the fireworks to begin.

Angelo Simmons, who was the chief tormentor of the Wolves defence, had an off day in front of goal and it was Darrell’s strike that would change the dynamics of the match.

After Jahi Shakir pulled off a fine double save from close range from Simmons, Darrell beat the Wolves goalkeeper with an effort that should have been a routine stop.

It would be the push that the hosts needed as Darrell continued to supply Simmons with chances. But the influential playmaker made a hash of an effort from 18 yards, sailing his effort high and wide of the intended target.

Wolves had their moments before Darrell’s strike, with skipper Vincent Minors jr and Tamauri Tucker both testing Treadwell Gibbons in Town’s goal.

Darrell then sunk Wolves in the 90th minute.

After Simmons broke free down the right flank and chipped Shakir, Darrell fired home from point blank range.

“We knew what was at stake. They were a different side and with the result on Friday night (Cougars 1 Village 0) we knew that a win would see us play Cougars,” added Darrell.

“They pushed us hard so credit to them but we are advancing and that’s the main point of these games.”

Boulevard 4 X’Road’s 3 (after extra time)

A hat-trick from Tymon Daniels still wasn’t enough to push X’Roads into the next round of the Shield Competition yesterday.

Two goals from Dun-ya Taylor’s propelled Boulevard to the win.

Before the Daniels/Taylor showdown began, it was Teiko Lowe who opened the scoring to give Blazers the lead in the 37th minute.

Daniels got his first of the game in the 52nd minute and then gave his side the lead in the 62nd minute for the first time.

Randy Broadbelt pulled Boulevard level midway through the second half and Taylor thought he had won the game for his side in the 87th, only for Daniels to grab the third equaliser of the game in added time.

Taylor then scored the winner in the 107th minute to get his troops into the next round.

St. David’s 1 Somerset 1

In yesterday’s lone Premier Division match, St David’s and Somerset Trojans shared the points in their make-up game at Lords in St David’s.

Striker Dominique Lambert gave the hosts the lead in the seventh minute, a lead that would stand until the dying stages.

The Islanders might have thought they had secured all three points but Trojans danger man Adrian Burrows levelled the scores in the 88th minute.
