Five of the best: Sunshine Seniors Club top hat show prize winners.

Members of the Sunshine Seniors Club of the Southampton Seventh-day Adventist Church pulled out all the stops this week to see, not who was the just the “best”, but rather the ‘most excellent’ in their 10th annual Tea and Hat Show.In the end, club president Mrs Mayville Wilson, asserting her executive authority, declared the three-hour show itself the best ever in the history of the Sunshine Club; and she thanked the myriad of behind-the scene volunteers who made it happen. Some had raided their personal wardrobes, others their flower gardens, for materials for the dainty hats they created and modelled; and a special group raided their pantries to ensure the patrons were well refreshed. The three judges were Julie Richardson, Gwen Dean and Dorothea Morrissey, who also was the lively commentator. It fell to the judges to determine Aleia Williams had the most beautiful hat in the show, and also deserved first prize for the best classy/chic hat or outfit, with Delyte Rawlins runner-up.Beautician Barbara Lewis-Mills took two first prizes for the best handmade flower, and most unique hat; runner-up was Joan Robinson.First prize for best hand-made hat, to Gladys Smith; Melvina Robinson, best church hat and outfit, with the runner-up being Catherine Cox.“There were no flies on Gloria Trott,” quoting the commentator, for her best creative, head-to-toe formal outfit, with Catherine Trott, runner-up. The prize for honourable mention went to Gwen Simmons.

The chic, one and only Gloria Trott.
The stylish non-competitors, who worked behind the scenes to make the show happen: Dorothea Morrissey, Betty James (seated), Lois Scott, and Barbara Outerbridge.
