Between eight and ten athletes from five sports will represent Bermuda at the Summer Olympics in London this month.Bermuda Olympic Association confirmed yesterday that eight are certain to represent the Island in London; long jumpers Tyrone Smith and Arantxa King, triathletes Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy, equestrian Jillian Terceira, swimmer Roy-Allan Burch and 49er sailors Jesse and Zander Kirkland.Sprinter Tre Houston and middle distance runner Aaron Evans still have an outside chance as both are making one final push to reach the qualifying marks at a meet in Canada this weekend. Countries have to submit their teams by tomorrow.Houston is trying to qualify for the 200 metres while Evans came agonisingly close to the qualifying time of 1:46.36 in the 800 metres on Thursday night with a winning time of 1:47.92.“Unfortunately he won the race but not the time we are looking for,” Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson said in an e-mail to Bermuda Olympic Association president Judy Simons after the race.“One more chance and I told him to put it all out there on the track. He ran a bit too conservative. This is his first professional race and I thought he probably figured the guys he was running with were faster than him. Hopefully now he knows. I don’t think Aaron really realises yet how good he is as he has only lost one race this entire season.”Simons told The Royal Gazette yesterday: “Track and Field is the most difficult as they have the longest qualifying period. Tyrone is 99.9 percent there, he has actually qualified at a ‘B’ standard and as long as there isn’t anyone else trying to do long jump, what LOCOG (London organising committee of Olympic Games) and the IAAF said is we can’t foresee any problems in confirming on Sunday night that he has made the team.“The difficulty is because LOCOG has set numbers for the ‘A’ standard we have had to wait right to the end because they have only allowed so many to participate in the athletic field. So because of the standards that have been set by LOCOG as to the qualification periods, the IAAF won’t be ratifying the countries until Monday night. Then they will send communication to the governing body as to the athletes who have qualified. In Arantxa’s case, the NOC made application for an unqualified female and that got approved straight away, but the boys are having to go right down to the wire.”Officials travelling with the Bermuda team include swim coach Ben Smith, Watson and national track coach Brian Wellman and Paul Peerech, groom Johannes In Den Eng and horse physio Cedric Marie with equestrian Terceira. Neil de Ste Croix will accompany the triathletes Butterfield and Duffy while Paul Hiles and Mark Asquith will go with the sailors. There is also a massage therapist, Richard Johnson, and physiotherapist Sandro Fubler.Simons will be attending along with BOA General Secretary Philip Guishard and Stan Douglas, the Chef de Mission, who will join executive delgates from 204 other National Olympic Committees. Premier Paula Cox and Sports Minister, Glenn Blakeney, are also accompanying the team.“The BOA congratulates Bermuda’s team on their significant achievements in qualifying for the 2012 Games,’ said the president. “They have already done us proud and we wish them the very best in competition. We are pleased to have helped play a part in their journeys to success.”
