Masonic Brethren form a guard of honour for the late Calvin Crockwell at the Anglican Cathedral.

The Cathedral of Most Holy Trinity Church in Hamilton was packed to overflowing two Sundays ago as hundreds braved the elements, even standing outside in the rain, to pay last respects to Calvin Calsworth Dilton Crockwell. Many were fuly regaled members of various Masonic Lodges who esteemed Brother Calvin as a special brother. In fact, he was eulogised as “a superstar in freemasonry” by Wor. Bro. Terry Greene, the Secretary of his “mother lodge”, Friendship and Harmony Lodge under the Grand Registry of Ireland. The Secretary went on to underscore highpoints of what he termed “the ostentatious journey” of Calvin from the time of his initiation as an Entered Apprentice, on May 5, 1994.Aged 59, Calvin was an electrician by trade, whose skills were much in demand all over the island. Ten years ago he started his own company, Corcon Limited servicing major establishmens in and around the city.It was his love of sports, and his genial presence at many events, that put him on course for his future wife Beunice, who survives. She is the front office receptionist and secretary at the Cabinet Office. Eldest son Garrett Crockell in his tribute to his father at the funeral service, related how, upon being introduced to her in 1978 at a football game at Somerset Cricket Club, Calvin asked her if she was married and she said “no”. His response was, “I am going to marry you.” Beunice walked away, saying “that will never happen.”But he was determined not to give up on Beunice, since he knew her mother, having fixed her refrigeration units at her job. Her Mom thought Cal was the nicest young man she had ever met and she did not hesitate to tell her daughter so. The congregation chuckled as their son declared “the rest is history”. The couple married on September 6, 1980. They became parents of Garrett, Jamal and Nicole Kally.Calvin became ill in May, 2011. Thinking he had injured his hip somehow, he went to his doctor and was diagnosed with cancer at the end of June. His stoic fight for life during treatment in Boston and Bermuda, with his wife at his side served to deepen the love and respect of his many friends and admirers. He succumbed to his illness on Friday, November 25, surrounded by family and friends. The Secretary of Friendship and Harmony Lodge (F & H), the Wor Brother Terry Greene beginning his tribute at the funeral of Wor Bro Calvin Crockwell, apologised for the absence of the current Wor Master Bro David Noel Cann and a contingent of Brethren who were abroad.Calvin was initiated as an Entered Apprentice on May 5, 1994, and passed to the Fellow Craft or 2nd Degree on February 2, 1995 and finally raised to his third or Master Mason degree on February 1st 1996. Continuing his 8 year Masonic journey by working through the various offices in the lodge, his dedication and hard work was rewarded by becoming Worshipful Master of Friendship and Harmony Lodge in 2004.The title of Worshipful Master is not taken lightly and is deserving to a fit and worthy brother who has mastered the inner workings of the craft. Wor. Bro. Calvin Crockwell was most deserving and is one of only two Worshipful Brothers to ever serve two consecutive terms as the Master in the history of F & H.Bro Greene went on to state: We have a saying in Masonry that if a Master serves two terms “that’s because he did not get it right the first time, so you must serve again”. But in reality it’s an honour and distinction, a rare opportunity.WB Crockwell’s unique qualities were noticed from his initiation. Not only did he have a very high IQ for freemasonry; he quickly grasped the advanced workings, was a true Mason, loved by all, and a historian of the Craft. He became an obvious choice to serve as Director of Ceremonies (DC) when the opportunity was presented. That office which must be held by a Past Master is probably the most important in the Lodge after the Worshipful Master. The DC is a valuable asset to any lodge and is not changed except at his own wish or within the regulations laid down by the Grand Lodge or for some reason which may be considered advisable by the members of the lodge. Worshipful Brother Cavlin Crockwell was still serving in that capacity up to his death. He was an expert on ritual in all of the degrees of freemasonry; a master on such matters as etiquette and lodge jurisprudence; thoroughly conversant with the contents of the book of our Laws and Constitutions; he gained the respect of the brethren, combined with a commanding presence, gentle courteous manner and great tact. One would not argue that he was one of the best performers in the delivery of a lecture.WB Crockwell was instinctively noticed by other Constitutions within the craft. In addition to DC at F & H, he had concurrently served as Secretary, Trustee and held the distinguished position as the Bermuda District First Grand Principle in the Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland, the Provincial Grand Marischal in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Bermuda of the Royal Order of Scotland; the Recorder of the Bermuda Shriners, a member of Mecca Shriners in the State of NY; and the Director of Ceremonies in the Bermuda Irish Royal Arch Chapter. He had the pleasure of seeing his own son Brother Garrett commence hismasonic journey, and we know he will continue his legacy. Also the current F & H Wor. Master David Noel Cann acknowleged his gratitude to WB Crockwell who was his proposer, mentor and who installed him as Worshipful Master.WB Crockwell has been called to his reward in the bosom of the Supreme Architect. His passing is a great loss to his wife Beunice, family and friends, as well as to the various Constitutions in Freemasonry where his Masonic accomplishments enriched our lives. His contribution to the Craft will be with us always.
