Bascome puts unbeaten record on the line

Argentinian Matthew Abregu is confident he has what it takes to bring Bermudian Nikki Bascome’s impressive unbeaten streak to a screeching halt. The two amateur junior middleweight boxers will mix it up in a five -round contest at tonight’s Teachers Rugby Fight Night 15 ‘The Rematch’ at Berkeley Institute Gym.Abregu says he has done his homework on his opponent who he firmly believes he can outbox in the ring.“I have searched him (Bascome) up and he’s a good fighter,” he said. “But I’m confident enough and believe that I can definitely outbox him if he wants to box me or if he comes inside I can beat him inside. I’m predicting a win of course like he is.”The 20-year old orthodox fighter said he isn’t bothered by the fact Bascome has more competitive exposure in the ring of the two men.“He does have more ring experience than me so I expect a good fight,” he said. “But I’ve sparred three times a week with formidable opponents so I believe I have experience as well.“I’ve got guys in the gym that I work with that are 30-5 and 25-2 and worked with tons of pros so that doesn’t bother me. In the States you see guys with 20 fights or more all the time.”Bascome currently boasts an unblemished 9-0 record compared to that of Abregu that stands at a modest 3-3.“A lot of people look at my record but I’m a way better fighter than my record stands out to be,” Abregu warned. “I’ve trained very hard for this fight and never missed training.”Bascome will have the psychological advantage of fighting before the home crowd, something that Abregu also isn’t too concerned about.“I’m a big believer that the crowd is in there with him,” he said. “But the crowd can’t help him, it’s just me and him.”Bascome, 21, admits he doesn’t know anything about his next opponent but says he’s prepared for whatever he may throw at him in the ring.“I don’t know anything about him in terms of style or seen any of his tapes,” he said. “But this doesn’t affect me much as I’m used to going into fights not knowing much about my opponents.”Like Abregu, the reigning Dynamic Fighting Championship junior middleweight champ is confident of victory.“I’m looking to get the most out of this fight, both in a result and experience,” he said. “It’s always a pleasure to fight in your country and I’m looking to get the win.”Tonight’s junior middleweight fight will precede the main event featuring Bermuda’s Teresa Perozzi and American Tori Nelson who will compete for the vacant WBC World Middleweight Championship for the second time in nearly four months.
