Earnings jump for seniors in Bermuda

Salaries for seniors have jumped dramatically in recent years, according to data from the Labour Force Survey released by the Department of Statistics.

Between late 2019 and late 2022, median gross income from the main job for people in Bermuda above the age of 65 jumped by more than a third.

In November 2019, they earned $35,781 on average. In November 2020, that figure was $50,420, an increase of $14,639.

The report was based on a relatively small sample of the population on the island. It also provided no reasons for the rapid increase in average wages for older people in Bermuda.

The Department of Statistics did not respond to questions.

One person with experience in the senior community attributes the jump in wages for the 65-plus cohort to high earners staying in the job market due the challenging economic conditions of the past three years rather than a general increase in wages for all people in the subcategory.

A spokesman at Age Concern said the spike in the number may be the result of higher incomes individuals remaining in their jobs.

"It speaks to the climate of who in that age bracket is staying in the workforce," the spokesman added.

"It wouldn’t increase just because seniors are working more, which is obviously happening.

"I wouldn’t say overall they’re making more money.

"It doesn’t really come into those we help here."

In other age groups, the jump in earnings, if there was one, was less pronounced. In the 16-24 age group, the increase was 17 per cent; 25-35 7 per cent; 35-44 no change; 45-54 13 per cent; and 55-64 9 per cent.

The highest earnings were reported in the 55-64 cohort, where the average was $78,668 in November 2022.
