Revelling in the bounty of our culinary history

Sure to be a treat for foodies and fans of local heritage alike, the Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series, in collaboration with the Heritage Advisory Committee, presents A Taste of Bermuda Culinary Festival on Friday, May 9th. From 6pm until 9.30pm, films on Bermuda’s culinary heritage, featuring Fred Ming, Dolly Pitcher and others, will be shown continuously on the upper level of the World Heritage Centre while, over in King’s Square, you can taste the food of our first settlers with samplings of fish, fowl and pork roasted and served by participating restaurants Tavern by the Sea, Griffin’s, and Wahoo’s Bistro. You can also expect period costumes, live music at the World Heritage Centre and King’s Square and speakers, including Joe Gibbons on Bermuda’s food history, Allan H Pitcher on St David’s mullet roe, and Llew Hollis on shark oil barometers. Tickets for samplings are $10 and available from the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and participating restaurants. Bermuda Folk Club Presents invites you to join them for their next musical event Folk n’ Funny at Spanish Point Boat Club on Saturday, May 10th. Doors open at 7.30pm and music will be from 8pm with talented local performers playing all styles of music with a focus on comedy songs and skits. BUEI invites you to a presentation by William B Gillies, retired wreck diver and restorer of maritime artefacts, on Thursday, May 15th. Bill is internationally recognised as an expert in the field of rebuilding fragile historic glass artefacts and his lecture Reefs, Wrecks and Relics is sure to enthral both residents and visitors alike. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The lecture itself will start at 7.30pm. Ticket holders are entitled to 20 percent off dinner at Harbourfront either before the lecture from 6pm, or afterwards. For dinner reservations, call 295-4207 and mention the lecture. Masterworks Artist in Residence Fran Giffard invites you to drink creatively while adding pigment to a series of bird drawings on Saturday, May 17th. Wet Your Palette will run from 1pm until 3pm and participants will be able to enjoy Masterworks wine and the wonderful views of the gardens as they dive into their creative side using aquarelle, graphite pencil, gouache and white ink. An opportunity to get your praise on will be at the Bermuda Day Gospel Explosion at the Greater Heritage Worship Centre, Dundonald Street on Saturday, May 24th. From 7pm, the show will feature Perfect Praise (New Creation Praise Team), Annointed for Praise Warriors (New Creation Dance Team), recording artist Tricray Astwood and many others. An opportunity to see some world-class guitarists while supporting guitar music right here in Bermuda as the Bermuda School of Music presents the 11th Annual Bermuda Guitar Festival from Thursday, May 29th to Sunday, June 1st. The first concert will feature classical guitarists Steve Crawford and Matt Palmer at 7.30pm on Friday, May 30th. On Saturday, May 31st, there will be a concert with classical guitarist Jerremiah Smith and jazz guitarist Jody Fisher at 7.30pm. Finally, on Sunday, June 1st, there will be a Student Gala Concert, featuring the students of the Bermuda School of Music guitar department, at 5pm. The student concert is free and the other two are $30. This year they will also be offering a series of jazz guitar workshops by Jody Fisher. The workshops will be held from 9.30am until noon on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the cost is $150 for all three. All performances and workshops will be at St Andrew’s Church on Church Street. Tickets are available from the Bermuda School of Music, Music Box or online at www.pTix.bm.

The 7th Annual ITF Bermuda Beach Tennis International Tournament will be served up (pun intended) on Tuesday, August 26th and Wednesday, August 27th at Horseshoe Bay Beach. The event will feature G1 Doubles Men and Ladies on both days with the Bermuda Amateur Finals on the Wednesday. Admission is free for spectators. Adding a little spice for this year, the International Tennis Federation, the governing body of Beach Tennis, has announced that the ITF Bermuda Beach Tennis International Tournament will be part of the Triangle of Beach Tennis for 2014. This will be ten days of beach tennis, beginning on Thursday, August 21st in Long Beach, New York. This will run until the 24th and then the 25th has been designated as a travel day to Bermuda. Travel day to final portion in Puerto Rico will be on Thursday, August 28th, with the event itself running from August 29th to the 31st. There is $30K is prize money, $10K for each country, up for grabs as well as points for ITF rankings.
