Teenager stole bike because he ‘wanted to take a ride’

A teenage student pleaded guilty to stealing a motorcycle and leading police on a chase through Hamilton.Marcus Tucker, 16, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty to taking a vehicle without consent, driving in a manner dangerous and driving while disqualified by age when he appeared at Magistrates’ Court.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said police noticed a motorcycle with two passengers on St John’s Road around 11.55pm on October 2.The officers signalled for the vehicle to stop. The driver of the motorcycle pulled over, but sped off once the pillion passenger stepped off the vehicle.Police followed the vehicle down Woodlands Road and through two red lights onto Front Street and Queen Street before the rider fell off the motorcycle near the junction with Church Street.Asked why he had tried to escape, Tucker told officers: “I knew the bike was stolen.”Magistrate Juan Wolffe asked him why he stole the bike.He told the court: “I saw the bike and I thought, yeah, I wanted to take a ride. I didn’t have a bike.“I was just young at the time. I have changed now. I haven’t been in trouble for a while.”Tucker is on two years’ probation for a separate offence. Mr Wolffe fined him $500 for driving dangerously and driving while underage.For stealing the motorcycle, Mr Wolffe sentenced Tucker to two years probation to run concurrently with his existing sentence.As part of that Tucker must abide by a curfew and undergo counselling if ordered by his probation officer.lUseful website: www.bps.bm.
