Traffic stop leads to deportation of Jamaican man here illegally

A Jamaican living illegally in Bermuda is to be deported this week after being caught on a minor traffic offence.Joel Ezroy Deans, 30, was charged yesterday in Magistrates’ Court with unlawfully remaining in Bermuda since July 9, 2008.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told the court that Deans was stopped by police while riding his motorcycle on North Shore Road on February 26.He was carrying no identification at the time, and gave his name as Joel Miller. The false name had two warrants attached to it, and Deans was arrested. He later admitted his real name at Southside Police Station. It was discovered he had his own wanted poster at the Department of Immigration and had overstayed his three-week visitor permit by more than two-and-a-half years.Deans told senior Immigration inspectors that he had stayed on the Island since his June 17, 2008 arrival in order to provide for his children back in Jamaica. He refused to divulge the names of people who had employed him here.An Immigration official told the court Deans would be sent home within two or three days.Magistrate Juan Wolffe sentenced him to a months’ imprisonment, subject to the execution of his deportation.
