Man apologises for nearly running down police officer

A 27-year-old Warwick man was sentenced to three years’ probation after nearly running down an officer while trying to avoid arrest.Aswad Wilson pleaded guilty In December to assaulting an officer last October, in an attempt to pervert the course of justice.Magistrates’ Court heard that officers attended a domestic disturbance on St Mary’s Road around 9.10pm on October 14. They found Wilson sitting on a wall outside the property when they arrived.They attempted to arrest him on a separate matter but Wilson ran, leaping over a wall and fleeing into a wooded area.Police Inspector Troy Glasgow eventually located Wilson in a silver car near the Lorraine Rest Home.Wilson attempted to drive away however Insp Glasgow stood in the road in an effort to get him to stop. Wilson accelerated instead of slowing down.Insp Glasgow moved to avoid being struck and, as he did so, attempted to reach into the car window to remove the keys. Instead, his arm struck the window causing him to bleed profusely.Doctors later performed surgery, removing pieces of glass and mending muscle tissue.Wilson was arrested at his home following a raid by the Armed Response Unit.Yesterday, lawyer Shade Subair said her client has a serious problem with alcohol and has no recollection of the incident.She described Wilson as extremely remorseful and called for a community sentence.“He accepts that his problem is one which requires rehabilitative treatment, more than a punitive approach because of the alcohol,” she said.She noted that Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy had called for a period of three to six months of incarceration but Wilson had already been in custody more than three months.Wilson apologised to Insp Glasgow, saying he never intended to hurt anyone. He also apologised to his wife and son for missing his son’s first birthday and Christmas by being locked up.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Wilson to three years’ probation with conditions including refraining from alcohol and illegal drugs and submitting to any form of rehabilitation as recommended by court services.He further ordered that Wilson obey a curfew for the first three months of his probation.
