Man convicted of threatening to blow up ex-girlfriend’s car

Magistrates' Court

A 30-year-old man who admitted shattering his ex-girlfriend’s car window and threatening to blow up her car and shoot her was sentenced to time already served in custody in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Dennis Richardson, of no known address, pleaded guilty to these charges on August 4.

On that date, he also pleaded guilty to assaulting Vernae Leverock and damaging her door and flower pot.

Magistrate Craig Attridge had ordered that Richardson remain in custody until yesterday’s sentencing.

Maria Sofianos, for the Crown, said that although he has no previous criminal convictions, a violent history has been shown in Richardson’s mental health reports and that he may be a risk to the wider community.

Because of this, Ms Sofianos suggested that Richardson be sentenced to nine months in prison including time already served.

Patricia Harvey, Richardson’s attorney, called her client an “able and capable Bermudian who wants to turn over a new leaf”.

She also told the court that even though Richardson has some mental issues, he was very sorry for his actions and had expressed a willingness to attend anger management classes.

Richardson apologised to the court and said that he just wanted to go home to his children and be successful in life.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Richardson to time already served in custody, and gave him a stern warning to take control of his life.
