Man ordered to mental health treatment court

A man who threatened to “blow up” the Hamilton Police Station and shattered one of its glass doors has been ordered to participate in a mental health treatment programme.

Elon Wainwright, 21, admitted damaging the door, as well as sending several “menacing” e-mails to police, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in September.

In one message, Wainwright, from St George’s, boasted about being “one of the best shoplifters in this country” and claimed to have “gotten away” with stealing from multiple businesses in another.

Wainwright sent all messages from an anonymous address between April and June this year, and smashed the door, causing almost $2,900 in damage, on May 27.

During his September court appearance, Wainwright also pleaded guilty to falsely getting merchandise from Digicel and trespassing on the company’s Cedar Avenue office in December 2022.

Officers arrested Wainwright for the offences in July, and he reappeared in court yesterday for sentencing.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered he observe mental health treatment court and remanded him into custody until that time.
