Woman facing extradition over murder in the Philippines

Active and sensitive matter: Maria Theresa Requerme and three others are wanted in the Philippines for a June 2025 murder (Photograph supplied)

A woman sought by authorities in the Philippines for a 2025 murder is expected to appear before the courts today facing possible extradition.

A government spokesman confirmed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had received a request from the Republic of the Philippines for the provisional arrest of Maria Theresa Jeremias Requerme, a Filipino national wanted in connection with a charge of murder.

The 27-year-old was reportedly taken into custody after reports surfaced on social media.

The spokesman said: “The request relates to criminal proceedings before the Regional Trial Court of the National Capital Judicial Region in Quezon City, Philippines.

“Philippine authorities allege that Ms Requerme was involved in the killing of Mauricio Ramirez Pulhin in Quezon City on June 15, 2025. A warrant for her arrest was issued by the Philippine court on September 24, 2025.”

The spokesman said that in the wake of the request, the matter would be processed in accordance with the relevant laws with Ms Requerme expected to appear in Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, said: “Bermuda has now received an official request from the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the appropriate legal process is being followed.

“Extradition proceedings are judicial proceedings governed by legislation and Bermuda's international obligations.

“The fact that a person is sought for extradition does not establish guilt, and it is important that the legal process is permitted to proceed without speculation or commentary which could prejudice either the proceedings in Bermuda or the criminal proceedings in the Philippines.

“Given the public interest in this matter, my office will provide further information concerning the procedural progress of the case when it is appropriate to do so.”

The provisional-arrest procedure is an initial stage of the extradition process and does not constitute a decision that Ms Requerme will be extradited to the Philippines, the statement said.

The government spokesman said that further proceedings will be conducted in accordance with Bermuda law with the appropriate decisions being made by the court and other designated authorities.

Any issue concerning Ms Requerme's continued detention or release on bail will be a matter for determination by the Court.
