PHC slip closer to relegation

Southampton Rangers, 267 for eight, beat PHC, 66 all out, by 201 runs (Points: Rangers 17, PHC 0).For the briefest of moments PHC looked like they might preserve their Premier Division status for another week at least, then Mark Smith dropped Janeiro Tucker and the Warwick club began to limp tamely towards relegation.PHC had to win yesterday to maintain any realistic hopes of surviving in the top flight, as it was they slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season against a side who have hardly set the world alight this summer.Rangers are fighting a relegation battle of their own, however they have one thing in their corner that always makes them a threat and that’s the destructive force that is Tucker. The Rangers veteran hit a typically punishing 121 yesterday, all but winning the game in the process. With his side struggling on 150 for six Tucker was dropped on 36 by Smith running in from the mid-wicket boundary. It was the last chance he gave. From then on the ball was dispatched to all areas of Southampton Oval, and he and Dwayne Leverock (40) put on 123 for the seventh wicket taking the game away from a PHC side who have managed to score more than 200 just once this season. Things had started so well for PHC, who had the home team five for two and struggling after Kevin Tucker had accounted for Dion Stovell and Alex Dore.Even with Quinton Burch (44) making a cameo appearance at the top of the order PHC still had their noses in front and when Cal Waldron had Burch caught by Khiry Fubert on the boundary and then bowled Andrew Raynor, Rangers were 60 for four.Delray Rawlins picked up the wickets of Curtis Jackson and Shannon Raynor (26) and the visiting team were starting to believe that a life-saving win was on the cards.Janeiro Tucker had other ideas, and with PHC’s attack lacking any tangible threat other than Kevin Tucker and Kamau Leverock, old-hands Janeiro Tucker and Dwayne Leverock took their side closer and closer to safety.Content to play a supporting role as Janeiro Tucker laid waste to the PHC bowlers, Dwayne Leverock contributed some lusty blows of his own once his colleague was out and Rangers eventually finished on 267 from their 50 overs. For a team that has struggled with the bat all season, chasing 268 to win was always going to be a big task.It became much harder when Jason Anderson was run out by opening partner William White taking a single that wasn’t on, and White himself disappeared soon after, run out by Stovell when he backed up too far and couldn’t get back into his crease.Wickets fell steadily from then on, and Furbert (15) and Kevin Tucker (15) were the only two PHC batsmen to make it into double figures. Stovell was the pick of the Rangers bowlers taking three for 18, while Dwayne Leverock and Ryan Belboda picked up two apiece. While mathematically still able to avoid the drop, PHC are all but down, especially as their remaining games include a trip to league leaders St David’s.Rangers meanwhile haven’t just given themselves a shot at survival, they could yet, remarkably, still finish in the Belco Cup spots. The 17 points they took from yesterday’s game should be enough to lift them past Devonshire Rec, who were fifth and to within a couple of points of fourth-placed Willow Cuts. Before that however they play Devonshire Rec on Saturday, in a game that could decide the final team to go down this season.
