Robinson spin helps drive Somerset towards promotion

Somerset 111-3 beat St George’s108 all out by seven wicketsFour wickets for Jacobi Robinson and a ruthless batting display helped Somerset to a comfortable victory over 10-man St George’s in a game reduced to 39 overs a side due to rain. The result all but ensures Somerset’s promotion back to the Premier Division.Batting first, St George’s got off to the worst possible start when Jordan DeSilva had opener Onias Bascome bowled off the first ball of the match.Mishael Paynter (18) and Christian Burgess (16) helped to steady the innings after this early loss with a partnership of 31.A further wicket for DeSilva, who recorded figures of two wickets for 10 runs, and a run-out swung the game back in Somerset’s favour.St George’s were unable to deal with the spin of Robinson (four for 22) following his introduction in the 12th over and he was supported by Justin Donowa (two for 15) as the East End club regularly lost wickets and were bowled out in 25.2 overs.Somerset wasted little time in chasing down the target, with opener Jermaine Warner (29) hitting 22 off the fourth over of the innings.Despite losing two quick wickets, Somerset continued to score quickly as Greg Maybury (22 not out), Yajni Dutton (20) and DeSilva (26 not out) all scored at well over a run a ball. An unbeaten 44 run partnership between Maybury and DeSilva saw Somerset reach their target in just 12.4 overs.Onias Bascome was the most successful St George’s bowler, claiming two for 21, while Chae Foggo (one1 for 37) was the only other bowler to take a wicket. No results were recorded in the other First Division games between Young Men’s Social Club and Somerset Bridge, Flatts against PHC, and Western Stars against Warwick because of the rain.
