Willow Cuts win T20 opener

PHC 132Willow Cuts 136-3Willow Cuts extended their winning start to the season with a comfortable seven wicket victory in the opening match of the Lindo’s T20 Tournament last night at Somerset Cricket Club.No official umpires showed up for the match and the main talking point was the use of white clothing and a red ball which left the PHC fielders, in particular, at a disadvantage once darkness fell as the ball became nearly impossible to see against the dark sky. On at least four occasions skied chances were completely missed by the fielders.“The red ball favours the team batting first because at night the ball is too dark to pick up,” agreed Willow Cuts captain Dwight Basden afterwards.“I think they are going to have to make a change, even the pink one they used last year was hard to pick up. I think coloured clothing would be the answer but for most teams maybe it is too late to make the conversion to coloured clothing because it is pretty expensive. The answer is definitely a white ball.”After winning the toss and batting, PHC posted 132 in 18.4 overs, after an opening stand of 65 between Ellsworth Bean (15) and Kevin Dill (38) laid the foundation as they put on 85 in 10 overs. Number three bat Collin Stewart was the only other bat in double figures with 21 as PHC slumped from 92-3. Willow Cuts conceded 33 extras, including 22 wides and 10 byes as Sheroy Fubler led the bowling with four for 28 and 15-year-old Faheem Swan claimed two for five in his one over at the end of the innings. Veteran spinner David Adams had two for 26 from his four overs. Both teams took the opportunity to rest several senior players, with PHC playing three 14-year-olds and Cuts three 15-year-olds.Cuts took just an hour to reach their target, and with plenty of overs to spare, as their first 50 came up in just 4.1 overs. Ricardo Brangman led the way with 39 not out from five fours and a six while Bergon Spencer scored 23 not out. The pair added 48 in an unbeaten fourth wicket stand. Opener Dwight Basden scored 16.PHC, too, were generous in the extras department, conceding 58 runs in extras, including 50 through wides.Another T20 match is scheduled for tonight at Devonshire Rec where the home team will meet Flatts (6.00 start). Warwick have withdrawn their team from the competition, forcing the BCB to issue a revised schedule for the West teams.
