Ian Armstrong of Southampton Rangers and St George’s all-rounder Onias Bascome won the Logic awards after outstanding performances on the weekend.Armstrong was voted the Logic Player of the Week after scoring 89 runs as Rangers amassed 391-7 on their way to a 253-run victory. He shared in a 122-run stand with captain Dion Stovell (76) for the fifth wicket.Teenager Bascome won the The Logic Emerging Player of the Week award following his all-round performance for St George’s in a losing cause against neighbours St David’s. In his first league match of the season, the 18-year-old, who lives in Birmingham, England, scored 72 out of a St George’s total of 161. He then claimed two for 41 as St George’s threatened an upset before St David’s fought back to win by three wickets.Bascome is a member of the Bermuda Under-19 team that will travel to Canada next month for regional Youth World Cup qualifying matches against Canada and the United States. All of the teams that would have made up the Premier Division this season, had the decision not been made by the Bermuda Cricket Board to return to one league, are occupying the top six places in the standings as the league season enters its halfway stage this weekend. Southampton Rangers head the tables on 65 points with four wins from five matches, with just two points separating the next three teams - St David’s (58), Willow Cuts (56) and Cleveland (56). St David’s and Cuts both have four wins from four matches, with official standings from the Bermuda Cricket Board not showing Cuts’ match on Sunday against Devonshire Rec which was called off because of the rain. Cuts have requested to the BCB that the match be rescheduled and the matter was expected to be discussed at a Cricket Committee meeting last night.Somerset, who won the First Division last season, and Bailey’s Bay, the Premier Division champions, hold down the fifth and sixth spots in the standings. Bay have lost two of their four matches so far, though the return from injury of captain Stephen Outerbridge will be encouraging ahead of Sunday’s crucial match against Willow Cuts on Sunday. Outerbridge’s top knock of 89 came in a losing cause against Cleveland on Sunday as Cleveland moved into early contention in the title race.So far no top six team has lost to a team in the bottom half of the standings, though St George’s came closest on Sunday against unbeaten St David’s. Rangers’ only loss was against Willow Cuts while Cleveland’s lone defeat was at the hands of Rangers.Rangers, winners of the season’s first trophy, the Belco Cup, are also dominating the batting and bowling aggregates, with Dion Stovell replacing Malachi Jones as the top scorer with 241 runs following his half century on Sunday. Jones has 216 runs and Ryane Shepherd of Somerset Bridge 201 runs.In the bowling, spinner Derrick Brangman is enjoying his first season with Rangers with 16 wickets while teammate Stovell has 13 and Brian Hall of Western Stars 12.Weekend schedule: St David’s v Somerset Bridge; PHC v Southampton Rangers; Western Stars v Somerset; Warwick v Devonshire Rec; Willow Cuts v Bailey’s Bay; Cleveland v Flatts.
