‘I did nothing wrong’ Jones

Malachi Jones has denied any wrongdoing during Sunday's match between Willow Cuts and Bailey's Bay when he allegedly walked off the field in protest of an umpire's decison.

Bermuda all-rounder Malachi Jones has denied any wrongdoing following an incident at the end of the game between Willow Cuts and Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday.Willow Cuts’ 60-run win was overshadowed by controversy when a confident appeal for a catch behind against Rodney Trott was turned down by umpire Oscar Andrade off Jones’ bowling.Jones was so upset with the decision that he allegedly walked off the field and had to be persuaded by player/coach Dexter Basden to return. While acknowledging that he did step off the field for a few seconds to gather himself, Jones strongly denied bringing the game into disrepute.“It’s really being blown out of proportion,” the strike bowler told The Royal Gazette.“I was bowling and Rodney hit the ball and it was caught. I didn’t appeal or look back to the umpire because everyone else was appealing, so I ran down where the catch was taken to celebrate.“The umpire didn’t give him out so I continued going the way I was going, stepped off the field, grabbed some water and came back on, that’s it.“Not once did I say anything to the umpire, make any remarks or things of that nature, when I came back on. I continued my over.“The umpires’ decisions went both ways during the match so neither side can say they were done wrong. It was hot out there, players wanted to win the game because it was a must-win for both clubs and in the end there shouldn’t be any issues regarding this.”Bermuda skipper Stephen Outerbridge, who played in the match, viewed the incident as further evidence that standards were being allowed to drop by the Bermuda Cricket Board.“I talked to the umpires (Andrade and Stephen Douglas) and they acted like nothing happened,” said the Bailey’s Bay captain.“That’s what is allowed in cricket, the Board have dropped their standards so the umpires have dropped their standards.“I’ve already told my team that at the rate we’re going Bermuda will be playing in Division Seven (World League) in the next five years.“At the end of the day you can’t play sports like that. Willow Cuts won the match and I’ll be going to work tomorrow.”Willow Cuts player/coach Basden yesterday jumped to the defence of Jones and believed no action should be taken against his player.“To my understanding Malachi was pretty upset but he didn’t walk off the field in disrespect. He actually went over to the scorers table to get a drink and came back on,” said Basden.“It wouldn’t be fair if anything came out of this because he wasn’t written up.“It was a situation where the bowler was clearly frustrated because he felt the batsman was blatantly out.“I was getting treatment on the side. I saw the umpires talking about something when I came back on the field. I asked them if there were any problems on the field and they said to get my team ready to continue to play.“He was not out, so let’s resume play and that’s what we did.“No one likes to lose so they will try to look at any way to make things right in their opinion and we don’t have any hard feelings towards them.“It’s a game that can become very competitive and those that lose don’t like the taste.“He (Stephen) was out first ball and if you’re out early in an innings and you’re the captain that wants to lead by example then you haven’t done your job, that’s simple.”
