St George’s make six changes

Oronde Bascome, St George's captain

In a bold move to win back the cup they lost last year, St. George’s made six changes to the team on Saturday night as four colts were brought in.Out go the experienced pair of wicketkeeper Jason Anderson and spin bowling all-rounder Delyone Borden while opening batsman Fiqre Crockwell and seam bowler Kyle Hodsoll were also dropped as teenagers Christian Burgess, Zeko Burgess, Lateef Trott and Onias Bascome come in for their first appearances. Two other changes were forced upon the challengers with Glenn Blakeney and Stefan Kelly not available, paving the way for captain Oronde Bascome and OJ Pitcher to return to the team.Pitcher was recalled to the team despite a 10-ball duck for the Vice-President’s XI in the final trial while Christian Burgess got the nod over the more experienced Anderson despite only scoring three runs as opener for the President’s XI.Performances in the final trial match can still sway the selectors as Zeko Burgess picked up three wickets to get the nod over George O’Brien.Team: Oronde Bascome (capt), Rodney Trott (vice-capt), OJ Pitcher, Lionel Cann, Treadwell Gibbons, Christian Burgess (colt), Onias Bascome (colt), Allan Douglas, Justin Pitcher, Lateef Trott (colt), Zeko Burgess (colt). Reserves: Macai Simmons, Delray Rawlins, Akeen Trott.Chairman of the St. George’s selectors Charlie Marshall admitted there was a long debate on the wicketkeeping position and the pace bowling when the selectors met on Saturday night immediately after the final trial. And he urged youngsters such as Macai Simmons, who scored 57 in the trial match and almost led the President’s XI to victory, and left-arm spinner Delray Rawlins to keep working hard as they represent the future.“We know Macai has a lot of potential, he batted extremely and all the selectors were impressed with his performance but we thought he just needs a little more maturity in other areas,” said Marshall today.“We spoke to him after the selection was completed and told him it was only a matter of time that he would be in the squad, same as Rawlins. At the meeting when we invited the members in, Herbie (selector Herbie Bascome) addressed both players and told them ‘you are our future’.“When I took over as chairman we began looking to build a young team because times have changed when you used to play two games in St. George’s and two in Somerset. Next year we’re going to Somerset and so we figured if we are going to make any changes let’s make them at home. We’re preparing the team for the future.”The six changes were more than most expected, but Marshall had stated beforehand he would not be afraid to drop those who were not performing.“The majority of guys who played last year failed and even the same individuals who played the five trial matches were not producing the goods,” said the former captain.“I would have thought they would redeem themselves and do well in the trial matches and impress the selectors but the scores were the same.“I put it out to the rest of the selection committee that if we’re going to make changes then let’s make them now, instead of taking new players to Somerset next year. The four colts that we picked worked extremely hard throughout the training sessions and the trial matches.”The omission of Borden and the decision to overlook Rawlins means that Allan Douglas, a pace bowler of genuine promise just a few years ago, will provide the back-up for Rodney Trott in the spin department. And the dropping of Anderson and Crockwell leaves the team without two experienced options as opening batsmen.“We had an idea where we’re going and the morning of play we will assess the wicket and decide from the three options who we’re going to open with,” said Marshall. Treadwell Gibbons, a colt last year, is likely to be one of the openers, alongside either captain Oronde Bascome or colt Christian Burgess. In Saturday’s trial, only two President’s XI batsmen reached double figures as Bascome’s team went down by five runs in a low scoring, rain-shortened match at Wellington Oval. The Vice-President’s XI managed just 126-6 when a rain stoppage lasting two hours and 18 minutes interrupted the match in mid-afternoon. When the covers were finally removed it was agreed that the Vice-President’s would end their innings and allow the President’s XI to begin their run chase at 5.45.But they didn’t have the best of starts as Justin Pitcher picked up three quick wickets to have them reeling at 18-3 before Kyle Hodsoll trapped Allan Douglas lbw at the other end. However, a stand of 44 between Onias Bascome and Macai Simons halted the slide. Bascome departed for 34 when he skied a drive toTrott at short extra-cover, while Simmons gave the selectors something to think about when he led the fightback with a top knock of 57 that included eight fours and two sixes.Simmons blew the chance to lead his team to victory when, on the last ball of the 27th over and with just six needed for victory, he tried to end it in style and was caught at long-on by OJ Pitcher to be the last wicket to fall. A single would have enabled him to keep the strike but the shot tarnished an otherwise impressive innings. No other President’s XI batsmen reached double figures, including captain Bascome, batting at number seven, who was caught behind off the first ball off Delray Rawlins who picked up three for 28 runs off eight overs while Pitcher had figures of three for 16 off six.Earlier, Lionel Cann scored 61 that included nine fours and three sixes off 54 balls for the Vice President’s XI as they, too, struggled early in their innings at 14-3. Delyone Borden scored 24. Zeko Burgess, who took the new ball, claimed three for 23 from 11 overs to lead the President’s bowling and cement his inclusion .SCOREBOARDVice-President’s XI won by five runs at Wellington OvalVice-President’s XIJ.
