St. David’s gunning for more trophies

Two days before they open the defence of the Eastern Counties title, St David’s were in Hamilton yesterday at the office of Logic Communications to receive the trophy as champions of the 2013 Logic Premier Division. And with two more trophies still up for grabs in the final month of the season, the Islanders will be going all out to add to their collection with victory in the Knockout tournament and Twent20 competition, matching the achievement of last year’s most successful team, Bailey’s Bay.The league trophy was presented to St David’s captain OJ Pitcher by Michael Brangman of Logic who praised the Islanders for their achievement which saw them go through the 12-game league season unbeaten.“On behalf of Logic Communications I would like to congratulate St David’s Cricket Club on their excellent performances of the past season, and I’m proud to present this award to OJ Pitcher, the captain, for their outstanding play for the season,” said Brangman.St David’s won the league for the second time in three years after the final round of league matches were rained out last Sunday, enabling them to finish 12 points ahead of Southampton Rangers in the standings.“I’d like to thank Logic for this award and for everything you’ve done this year and hope you continue to do so next year, with the weekly awards as well which gives the players some incentive and something to work towards,” said Pitcher.“Also, I would like to thank my team-mates and for the guys who showed up today. This is for our community, it means a lot to us and we won (Eastern) County last week and this was another goal we had for the season and we achieved it. We have two more trophies to play for, but the main two were County and league.“We dedicate this to all our fallen soldiers, we’ve lost a lot of loved ones in St David’s and we dedicate this to them who have watched over us all season.”Prior to the presentation, as BCB CEO Neil Speight waited for some of the St David’s players to arrive, a frank exchange took place between Speight and the St David’s players over the points structure and the format of the league which did come in for some criticism when the decision to made this season to revert to one division.Pitcher admitted he did not prefer the one division which led to many one-sided matches. “To be honest I wasn’t for it from the beginning and I think next year we should go back to the two league format where you have the top teams playing against each other on a more regular basis,” said the St David’s captain.Only one team, Cleveland, managed to score 200 runs against St David’s in the league as they won most of their matches quite comfortably. Bailey’s Bay, said Pitcher, presented their toughest match in the league.“They were chasing 160-odd (164) and were 100 for two and still had a lot of bats to come,” Pitcher remembers. “But as a team we bowled and caught well and came back and won the match and from there we figured it was meant to be.” Bay were dismissed for 158 to lose by six runs.“It’s been a team effort the whole year, not just one individual. Over the years people have said St David’s are a one or two-man team but it’s been proven again that we have a lot of quality players and we’ll be back next year.“It’s always a goal to win every trophy on the Island that there is to play for and if we get all the trophies we’ll be happy and if we don’t we will still have had a successful season.”Pitcher urged players to return to their home clubs in order to help make them stronger and more competitive.“The team we have this year is all home-grown St David’s players and we still have a few others who are playing for other teams who know who they are,” he said.“I encourage them to come back and challenge for spots, not just our team but all the other teams who have players around the Island playing for this club or that club. Show some commitment to your club, where you came from and help them to play better cricket.”
