Bermuda end World T20 qualifing group stage

David Hemp stroked 64 in a losing cause for Bermuda

Bermuda ended the World Twenty20 qualifying group stage on a losing note in the United Arab Emirates today.

The senior national cricket team went down by 25 runs against Papua New Guinea at the ICC Academy in Dubai in their final group B match — the team’s fifth straight defeat.

Papua New Guinea recovered from a precarious 26 for four in the fifth over to go on and post 168 for five in their allotted overs after electing to bat.

Bermuda replied with 143 for nine.

David Hemp led Bermuda’s unsuccessful run chase with 64 from 49 balls. He hit seven fours and a six.

Skipper Janeiro Tucker blasted 42 from 25 balls with four fours and two sixes while Dion Stovell chipped in with ten at the top of the order and Tre Manders, batting at number ten, added 12.

Hemp, who brought up his half century in the 15th over with a boundary off seamer John Reva, and Tucker featured in Bermuda’s biggest partnership.

The pair added 63 runs for the third wicket in 6.3 overs before Tucker was dismissed on the third ball of the 14th over.

Tucker’s dismissal was the beginning of a collapse that saw six wickets tumble for the addition of 20 runs which Bermuda never recovered from.

Fast bowler Willie Gavera was the pick of Papua New Guinea’s bowling attack with figures of three for 17 off four overs that included a maiden.

Reva (2-26) and leg break spinner Charles Amini (2-25) claimed two wickets each.

Papua New Guinea’s insurmountable total was built on aggressive knocks of 64 and 47 from middle order bat Mahuru Dai and opener Tony Ura. Amini (32) and wicketkeeper Jack Vare (14) were the remaining batsmen in double figures.

Dai was the mainstay of Papua New Guinea’s innings, adding 76 for the fifth wicket with Ura and an unbroken 66 for the sixth with Amini.

Seamer Malachi Jones (2-28) was Bermuda’s most successful bowler.

Bermuda finished seventh among the eight teams in group B.

Advancing to the World Twenty20 playoffs were group winners Afghanistan, Netherlands, Nepal, Scotland and Papua New Guinea.

Bermuda will take on Uganda in Dubai on Tuesday in a 13th place play-off.
