Stovell in the hunt for second straight MVP

Leading the way: Stovell had a superb season with the bat for Rangers

Dion Stovell, the Southampton Rangers all-rounder, has carried on where he left off last season by being one of the leading contenders for the Premier Division’s MVP.

The Bermuda Cricket Board’s annual awards ceremony will be held tomorrow evening at Gosling’s Wine Cellar.

Stovell, who won the award last year, led the points after 11 weeks with 542, including 372 in the batting, where he scored 407 runs, with five half-centuries in the Logic 50 overs league.

Points are awarded for performances in batting, bowling and fielding throughout the season, and Stovell’s consistency again with the bat had him leading team-mate Derrick Brangman by 30 points going into the last round of matches.

The bulk of Brangman’s points (350) came from his spin bowling, where he took a season-high 33 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls.

His average of 7.12 was the fifth best in the Premier Division, though the four bowlers ahead of him – Irving Romaine, Dajon Richardson, Tre Manders and Micah Simons — bowled just six overs between them in the league. By comparison, Brangman bowled 81.5 overs, including 15 maidens.

Third in the points was Jordan DeSilva of Somerset on 436 — 206 in the batting and 190 in the bowling. DeSilva scored 236 runs in ten innings with a highest score of 76.

Janeiro Tucker, the Rangers captain, Fiqre Crockwell of St David’s, Chris Douglas of Willow Cuts and George O’Brien of St David’s completed the top seven, with only four points separating team-mates Crockwell and seam bowler O’Brien.

Tucker totalled 426 points, 176 in the batting, 150 bowling and 100 in fielding, while Crockwell had 216 batting points and 180 from his fielding as a wicketkeeper for his total of 396.

Douglas, who was second behind Stovell with 402 runs and with a second best average behind Tre Manders of 67.00, amassed 334 batting points of his 394 points.

In the First Division, Kijuan Franks was the top allrounder with 475 points as he led Flatts to promotion with the bat and ball.

Franks was second behind Lionel Cann of Warwick with most runs (257) while he also tied with Seth Campbell of Western Stars (24) for the most wickets in the league. Nelson Bascome of Flatts took 20 wickets.

The awards for the season include most wickets, most runs in both divisions, Emerging Player of the Year, Umpire of the Year, Groundsman of the Year, Scorer of the Year, Best Club Team and Chivas Team Award for best sportsmanship. A Special Achievement award will also be presented at tomorrow’s ceremony. Last year veteran commentator CV “Jim” Woolridge received that award.

The 2014 season ended in controversy when the Lindo’s T20 final was postponed on September 27 because of safety concerns after a shooting the previous evening, hours after Rangers and Willow Cuts won their semi-final matches in St David’s.

Neil Speight, the BCB chief executive, confirmed yesterday that the match will not be played this year.
