Sussex make light work of South Africans

Fine form: Delray Rawlins of Sussex cuts the ball through backward point during his knock of 96 against South Africa A

Delray Rawlins and his Sussex team-mates wrapped up an impressive innings victory over South Africa A after taking 14 wickets on the third day at Arundel.

Will Beer, who took career-best figures of six for 29 in the first innings, snapped up three wickets in the space of seven balls after tea yesterday to put Sussex on course for an early victory, just when it looked as though the tourists would take the game into the final day.

Khaya Zondo, who made 95, and Willem Mulder (42) had put on 108 in 29 overs as South Africa A finally offered some resistance. However, Beer switched to the Park End to remove both batsmen in the space of five deliveries before picking up two of the last three wickets to finish with five for 62 and a career-best match haul of 11 for 91.

Beer was well supported by Abi Sakande, who claimed the first five-wicket haul of his career after the visitors had followed on 273 behind after being bowled out for 185 in their first innings yesterday.

Sakande took a great catch in his follow through to remove Tembe Bavuma for a golden duck, one of three wickets in a testing new-ball burst. Then he returned to the attack to make the crucial breakthrough after tea when he trapped Mulder lbw with the first ball of his spell. Dane Piedt was his fifth victim on his way to figures of five for 43 as South Africa A lost their last six wickets for 26 runs in 35 deliveries to go down by an innings and 50 runs.

Rawlins played a significant role in the Sussex fightback on the first day, scoring 96 after sharing in a century stand with Jonty Jenner, the pair carrying the score from 90 for four to 263 when Jenner was dismissed. Rawlins was bowled four runs short of a maiden first-class century, before Danny Briggs finished with 120 not out in the total of 458.

South Africa were dismissed for 185 in their first innings yesterday before Sussex enforced the follow-on and then dismissed them for 223 in the second innings. Rawlins, seldom used with the ball these days, bowled one over in the second innings, giving up seven runs.

n The Central Counties second round match between Western Stars and Tuff Dogs of the Evening League will be played next Saturday and not today, the Counties confirmed yesterday.

The competition, which has already had a couple of first round postponements, was originally scheduled to host the final on June 24, but that match, involving North Village, will be put back to allow Stars and Tuff Dogs to play on that day. The new date for the final has not been confirmed.
