Still having his say: Somerset selector Tucker

Janeiro Tucker will have say in determining his replacement in Somerset’s Cup Match team.

The all-rounder, a former Somerset captain, has accepted an invitation to serve on Somerset’s selection committee and assist head coach Jeff Richardson with coaching duties after retiring from Cup Match last year.

“It’s nice to be asked to do things after you finish playing Cup Match,” said Tucker, the England and Wales Cricket Board Level 2 coach. I think it’s an advantage as a selector to also be helping with the coaching because you get to see everything first-hand, and not just assuming who’s doing what.

“I was approached initially by Jeff and then by the club a few weeks ago and asked to assist.

“I’m helping out from a batting aspect, giving my input and helping with the players’ mindset on how to apply themselves in game situations.

“Jeff has definitely been putting the players through their paces in all aspects — fielding, batting and bowling and also in the middle with game scenarios — and everything looks pretty good.

“This is definitely a different element for me and I’m just trying to take the focus from playing into coaching and also being a selector. I wasn’t expecting this. I was expecting to go to Cup Match and just enjoy the festivities as a spectator for the first time since 1992 [Cup Match debut].”

Tucker bowed out in style at Somerset Cricket Club last year, scoring a disciplined 113 in an innings spanning nearly two sessions to become the first batsman to score five centuries in Cup Match. It was also the all-rounder’s first hundred in Somerset in what was his 21st Cup Match appearance. The son of former Somerset captain John Tucker holds multiple Cup Match records, including the most runs (1,491) and highest innings (186) which he achieved at Wellington Oval in 2001.
