Davin Dill keen to capitalise on century launch pad
Davin Dill has every reason to be confident after thumping the season’s first century against one of the island’s top teams in his first visit to the crease.
The PHC wicketkeeper-batter struck an unbeaten 103 from 54 balls in a losing cause as his team lost by 50 runs to a powerful Southampton Rangers side in an entertaining First Division Champion of Champions clash at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday.
While Dill is happy to have achieved a personal milestone, he is remaining calm with plenty more cricket to play when the regular season starts on May 9.
“It was good and it could not have been a better start for myself,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s definitely a good feeling to get off to a start like that, but it’s still early and I don’t want to get carried away because it’s a long season.
“Of course I got the hundred, but we did not get the win and at the end of the day I am a team player.
“I don’t want to make it too big of a thing because I looked at this match as a practice match, and I am looking way past it.”
The 27-year-old featured in a century partnership for the third wicket with PHC captain Charles Trott (52), steadying the ship in the wake of an early collapse in reply to Rangers’ 222 for nine after they took first strike on a batting-friendly track.
Dill felt his team could have won had they not leaked 30 extras, including 16 wides, and taken their catches.
“Had we done what we know we we’re supposed to do, bowled less wides and taken our catches, we definitely could’ve won the game,” he said.
“We had them 70 for five with all their big-name batsmen out. We had our foot on their necks, but we let them go.”
Despite coming up short, Dill reckons there are positives to take away from the match.
“We definitely gained confidence playing against one of the better teams on the island,” he said.
“We went into the game with the mindset of ‘let’s see where we’re at because we have new guys that haven't played cricket in years such as Kezie Richardson’. This was his first time playing cricket since probably middle school and he took four wickets [for 42].
“We are building and looking to pick up a few more players on loan, so we will have a stronger side than we had for our first game.”
