Oliveira favourite to claim top spot

Leading man: Oliveira

The final event of the highly popular Flying Colours mountain bike series takes place tomorrow at Hog Bay Park with some hotly contested categories coming down to the wire to decide which rider will claim the top spot, while in others the leaders will be looking to solidify their position.

Regardless, the action is expected to be fierce in the off-road sport that has attracted more than 175 riders throughout the season.

Barring mechanical problems or crashes, top junior rider Matthew Oliviera, who has shown that if he is on his game there is nobody to match his aggressive, powerful riding style, looks sure to lift the series title.

However, challenges from fellow juniors Robin Horsefield, Dylan Hill and Kaden Hopkins for at least a win tomorrow will be sure to make for an exciting race.

The male B category is a different story with just a single point separating the top two riders. Adam Kirk holds that lead over Andrew Hern, with both riders having secured three wins each but with riders able to drop their two lowest results of the nine race series this race will decide who is crowned the series champion.

The action is sure to be fast and furious from the start in what is anticipated to be the closely contested battle with Arthur Pitcher, a winner of two races himself, including the last event at Ferry Reach, clearly on form and looking to add another victory in his first full off-road season.

Male veteran Hans Hirsch has dominated the season with six wins and six second places, with Dexter Swan and Charles Swart, in his only appearance this year, the only two others to secure a top spot.

With Swan missing the last event, it is hoped that he will be on the start line to give Hirschi a run for his money, even though he has clearly sewn up the series win.

In the same race, Peter Dunne and Chris Roque will have their own battle going on behind as, with only two points separating them, they will be looking to take the third spot on the podium.

In a year in which the island’s juniors have come to the fore, the Male Novice category is no exception. Youngster Ziani Burgesson, who chose to race in an adult category this year, is looking set to win the series over Chace Toogood.

With Toogood having missed three races during the season, Burgesson needs to just finish close to him to secure enough points to solidify his position at the top of the standings, and based on recent strong performances the 14-year-old appears certain to do just that.

In the female categories, Alyssa Rowse has won every event in the B category, and by a significant margin, which is not a poor reflection on the other riders, but simply an indication of just how strong the 15-year-old is — and why there is such a buzz in cycling circles about her potential future in the sport.

The only blemish on a season that has seen Rowse pushing the top male B riders to the limit was at Ferry Reach, where technical rule infractions after a mechanical resulted in a disqualification. Sunday should be business as usual for her, with Ashley Robinson and Tristan Narraway, both enjoying a good series, riding for the other two podium spots.

Despite being the sole female veteran this year, Karen Bordage has been competitive with many of her male counterparts. Having missed a number of races, an appearance tomorrow will secure her the category title.

In the female novice, it is an interesting situation with Elizabeth Stewart heading the leaderboard, Andrea Proctor second and Kim Raymond third. But if Jennifer Wilson, winner of the four events she has competed in is on the start line, another victory could shake up the overall points standings.

The Junior Male 13-15 has provided some exciting contests between series leader Nick Pilgrim and Alex Miller, with just seconds between them in the last race. Sunday is expected to be no different and should provide a highly entertaining season finale. Kion Richardson is looking to hold on to third spot.

In the youngest 12-and-under events, despite their age, the competition is no less fierce, providing great entertainment for the spectators.

Azhai Smith is a clear leader on points, with Gordon Smith and Enshe-nice Smith battling for second and third.

In the female 12-and-under, Megan Hands has already sewn up the series by winning every event. Sisters Zoe and Jasmin Hasselkuss are second and third.
