Caitlin Conyers, right, celebrates winning the bronze medal in the women’s time-trial at the CAC Games

It was a fantastic afternoon for Bermuda’s cyclists at the Central American and Caribbean Games as Caitlin Conyers and Conor White both picked up bronze medals.

Conyers, who was Bermuda’s sole representative in the women’s time-trial and was taking part in the CAC Games for the first time, was the first rider to compete and set a time of 28min 35.24sec for the rest of the field to challenge.

It was only the final two riders Arlenis Sierra of Cuba, and Diana Penuela of Colombia, who beat Conyers’s time, with the Bermudian delighted to have secured a podium finish.

“I am really happy to have won a medal,” Conyers said.

“My goal going into it was to get on to the podium. I knew going in that there were some really strong women, particularly Arlenis Sierra from Cuba, who won, but I knew that I had the potential to be on the podium.

“I had a good race. It’s my favourite TT course that I've done in an international competition and so I was really happy. I didn't pace it perfectly, but luckily I was able to hold on for the last half of the circuit.”

The 33-year old Conyers is in action again on Friday when she takes part in the women’s road race but is not expecting to match her time-trial achievements.

“I am looking forward to the road race but it's a sprinters’ course so I don't have a lot of expectations,’’ she said.

Conor White also had the unenviable task of riding first but set a scorching average pace of 49.8km/h to finish in a time of 49:55.11 and was then forced to sit and wait on a medal until he watched his 17 rivals cross the line.

It was a long wait until White saw his time beaten by professional cyclists Miguel Angel Lopez Moreno and Walter Vargas, who both represent Colombia, with White finally free to celebrate the biggest performance of his career.

“The race was good and I definitely knew that a podium was a possibility based on previous races and how I was feeling,” White said.

“I really had a good ride, it was hot and humid, so that made it quite a bit more difficult.

“I did my best, probably my best average speed on the time trial ever and just finished on the podium behind the two Colombians, one of whom has won Tour de France stages, so I am really happy with it.

“If there is a course that's perfect for me, I think that was it.”

The silverware picked up by Conyers and White took Bermuda’s medal tally to five, which has surpassed the three amassed by the island at the last CAC Games in Colombia.
