Young students at Dalton E Tucker Primary were able to meet the educator after whom their school is named at a special service at White Hill Chapel.“It was a treat,” said acting school principal Jay Tucker. “In years to come, the impact of speaking with Mrs Tucker will register with them.”The veteran educator, who recently celebrated her 96th birthday, surprised teachers and students by joining them at the annual Easter gathering.Mrs Tucker was principal of the school when it was called Southampton Glebe - from 1942 to 1974.Added Mr Tucker: “She is, to my knowledge, the only living person who has a school named after her.”A portrait of her holds a place of pride in the Southampton school.Primary Six students joined Mrs Tucker at the Packwood Rest Home to celebrate her birthday in February, he said. For younger students however it was a first chance to speak with one of Bermuda’s most celebrated teachers.Dalton E Tucker is the adopted school of White Hill Gospel Chapel, according to church Elder Norbert Seymour. For close to 30 years the students have made a yearly trip there to hear the Easter story.“Mrs Tucker’s picture hangs at the school but some of the students have not seen her in person,” Mr Seymour said, hailing her as a “legend”.Following the 11am service during which Mrs Tucker spoke, Mr Seymour said: “She gave her remarks on how children should listen to their teachers, and she wanted to know how many of them wished to be teachers themselves. She also emphasised that they should have God in their lives.”Mrs Tucker also joined a luncheon given by the church for P1 to P6 pupils and teachers, and had her picture taken with young students.
