Bermudian wins US scholarship

Andreaz Glasgow

A Bermudian student living in New York has won a third scholarship to help him complete his education.

Andreaz Glasgow, 20, received a $2,500 bursary after he was chosen as one of 20 applicants to receive help from an organisation designed to support Black and Caribbean students.

Mr Glasgow admitted that although he had applied with the greatest of hopes, he did not expect to receive any awards.

He said: “It’s a lot more competitive in the US student-wise than in Bermuda.

“You can apply for them, but I’m sure they have over 10,000 applications.

“I didn’t really expect to get it, but when I got the e-mail, it was pretty exciting.”

Mr Glasgow was speaking after he also received the four-year Centennial Scholarship last year for $30,000 and a government bursary this year for $10,000.

Mr Glasgow is in his junior year at Long Island University, where he is undertaking a double major in international relations and diplomacy and political science.

He is also doing a dual degree, an undergraduate degree and a master’s in business administration, where he is specialising in management information systems.

Mr Glasgow said that he heard about the scholarships on the Young Caribbean Professionals Network’s social media site and applied on a whim.

He said that he chose to write an essay for his application because writing is one of his strengths, and that he outlined the qualities that helped him succeed.

Mr Glasgow said: “I sold myself as an individual, and I think that’s important for people to do.

“I showcased my struggles as well as my successes in life, and I would say that I did that eloquently through the essay that I submitted.”

Mr Glasgow said that although he did not anticipate anything, he was surprised to find out later that he had been accepted for a bursary.

He said: “I messaged my mom after 1am as I was coming back from the library to study.

“It took a while for it to set in because there are hundreds of scholarships available mainly for US students, and very, very, very few of these US-based institutions give to international students.

“That was my main shock — wondering ‘is this real?’”

Mr Glasgow’s cohort was selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants from the East Coast.

Most of the applicants had a GPA of 3.5 and were on their universities’ Dean’s Lists.

The bursaries offered ranged from $1,000 to $4,000, with the majority at $2,500.

Mr Glasgow said that he hopes to get a doctorate in business administration, but may consider becoming a solicitor in Britain.
