Bermuda Under-14 captain inspires victory over Martinique
Bermuda captain Adam Barritt was voted player of the match for the second time in a row after playing an instrumental role in a 2-0 triumph over Martinique at the Caribbean Football Union Under-14 Challenge Series yesterday.
Barritt, who limped off injured in stoppage time, opened the scoring when he made a great run into the box and tucked the ball beyond the goalkeeper in the 63rd minute.
Vashon Martin sealed the first three points of the competition for Vashun Blanchette’s side a minute later with a cool finish from a similar angle.
“I thought it was a really good game,” Barritt said.
“As a team we showed a lot better performance than yesterday. I also managed to get on the score sheet, which I’m really proud of.
“It was just lessons learnt from the last game. We definitely realised that we have to work a lot harder and we came out here and did it.
Bermuda made a brilliant start to the match when Mackay Browne connected with a pass from Psalm Caines and shot, but the Martinique goalkeeper made a great save.
Jace Postlethwaite fed Shiloh Stevens to have a crack at goal but the goalkeeper denied him. Stevens came close with another shot 13 minutes before half-time but Bermuda could not get past Martinique’s last line of defence.
After the break, Bermuda goalkeeper Henrik McIntosh made a fine stop to deny Martinique from a free kick.
Bermuda, who are second in group A with four points after a 1-1 draw with Barbados on Monday, play their last pool match against Dominican Republic today at 4.30pm Bermuda time.
“Dominican Republic should be a very tough test, so we’ll have to give it our all,” Barritt added.
“They’re definitely going to have some good players, so we have to wait and see.”
